A tattooed person suspends from hooks, laying flat, one leg higher than the other. Their head is back, and they seem to be smiling, dark hair dangling like an anime character.

  • Zapatista Tattoo

OK, so this Zapatista tattoo was done on a white guy (solidarity) by Mike Moses of Enigma in Richmond, but still, pretty interesting… I’m not surprised when I see a Che tattoo, or a communist icon, or Hitler even, but I wasn’t expecting to see a Zapatista tattoo.

Marcos is gay in San Francisco, black in South Africa, an Asian in Europe, a Chicano in San Ysidro, an anarchist in Spain, a Palestinian in Israel, a Mayan Indian in the streets of San Cristobal, a gang member in Neza, a rocker in the National University, a Jew in Germany, an ombudsman in the Defense Ministry, a communist in the post-Cold War era, an artist without gallery or portfolio…. A pacifist in Bosnia, a housewife alone on Saturday night in any neighborhood in any city in Mexico, a striker in the CTM, a reporter writing filler stories for the back pages, a single woman on the subway at 10 pm, a peasant without land, an unemployed worker… an unhappy student, a dissident amid free market economics, a writer without books or readers, and, of course, a Zapatista in the mountains of southeast Mexico. So Marcos is a human being, any human being, in this world. Marcos is all the exploited, marginalized and oppressed minorities, resisting and saying, ‘Enough’!

  • “Fight Until Die”

Everyone makes jokes about kanji tattoos that have innocent non-native mistakes resulting in humorous gramattical gaffs, but don’t forget that it’s also quite common to see the same in reverse. This is by Laura Perello at Samoa Tattoo Studio in beautiful Palma de Mallorca, Spain. Oops.

Well, it’s an easy mistake to make and I’m sure on that pretty little island everyone is so bliss filled that it’s really the least of anyone’s worries.

  • “A true friend will stab you in the front”

Now, personally I’d make the argument that a true friend opts to keep the stabbin’ to a minimum, but maybe I hang out with wimps? Here’s Natalie’s tattoo (photo taken the day after), done by Zach at Deep Roots in Seattle.

  • Krylon Paint Tattoo

Apparently this customer of Rico Saldivar‘s is a big fan of Krylon paint. No offense intended to Krylon, but I hope the tattoo was done with regular tattoo ink…

  • Habla Espaol?

Our friend Jay has a house here in Mexico not far from where we live. This is his new tattoo, “poquito“, by Stephen Hibbs at Suffer City Tattoo in Dallas, Texas. How very droll.

  • EXPLORER knuckle tattoo

I’ll post some more tattoo entries later today, but as knuckle tattoos go, I like the one that IAM:pillpoppinfun got done. You may remember Jesse from the “Have Mursi!” lip plates article. Check out his page for lots of big stretching…

  • People in glass houses sink ships

I thought I’d vaguely follow up on the many are chosen, few are pict tattoo with some tattoos from Boondock Saints, which we’ve been seeing more of lately (there are also some posted on the community site‘s “fan submission” section, although I can’t link to it directly due to their terrible flash interface) for some reason (be it simply that it’s a great movie, or perhaps a little clever marketing as well). In any case, here’s a very small assortment of them from the BME galleries…

There are varying degrees of evil. We urge you lesser forms of filth, not to push the bounds and cross over, in to true corruption, into our domain.
For if you do, one day you will look behind you and you will see we three, and on that day you will repent.
And we will send you to whatever god you wish.

  • Very punny.

This is from George in Buckie, Scotland, who had the tattoo done by Terry Ritchie at Thistle Tattoo Studio in Lossiemouth, Moray, Scotland. Many are chosen, few are pict.

  • You really need a Monday morning post?

Yeah, well, it’s a busy day for me. I have one thing to say to you, and I’ll say it using a tattoo by Erica Scott of River City Tattoo in Austin, Texas c/o IAM:DustGorrilla.

Seriously though, check back tonight because I have some cool stuff to post, I just don’t have time this morning — gotta catch a plane!

  • Sexy or Sekushi?

I suspect most of all because I put a major typo in the caption, writing “Canonese” instead of “Cantonese”, a lot of people have been writing in corrections on a Kanji piece currently in the BME galleries. Anyway, the wearer told me that it said “sexy in Cantonese”.

This isn’t some kanji tattoo horror story, but at the same time, the caption isn’t quite correct. What it actually says is “se-ku-shi” in Japanese Katakana, which would be the closest phonetic translation of “sexy” (so in a way, it’s sort of like speaking English with a really thick Japanese accent and pretending that you’re speaking Chinese). It pretty much does say “sexy”, just not quite in the way they thought.

Anyway, thanks to everyone who wrote in about it.
