A tattooed person suspends from hooks, laying flat, one leg higher than the other. Their head is back, and they seem to be smiling, dark hair dangling like an anime character.

  • Son of a bitch, I’m sick of these dolphins.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to go on an overnight drunk, and in 10 days I’m going to set out to find the shark that ate my friend and destroy it. Anyone who wants to tag along is more than welcome.

    – Steve Zissou – The Life Aquatic

Oh Bill Murray.  Is there anything you do that isn’t brilliant?  (For the record I choose to believe the Garfield movie doesn’t exist).

Seriously.  I grew up with Bill on the big screen on a regular basis.  I was a bit too young to catch his SNL stint, but by the time Ghostbusters came out, I was 6 and ready to see it.  I can remember being terrified by the scene in the NY public library, laughing at slimer and Rick Moranis, and thinking Dick getting melted marshmallow dumped on him was the greatest thing ever.  Of course it wasn’t until I was older that I was able to go back and watch Ghostbusters and truly appreciate the brilliance that went into making the film.  Seriously, go back and just watch Bill.  Every line is delivered perfectly.  I highly doubt any actor could have pulled that role off as perfectly as he did.

Of course, as time went on, Bill’s star began to fade.  By the 90s most of his films are forgettable, with maybe the exception of Groundhog Day and Rushmore.  Speaking of Rushmore, I’d say that was when he rose like a phoenix out of the ashes of his career.  Somehow Wes Anderson was able to reach back in time and yank the Bill Murray from 1984 and place him in the body of Bill Murray 1998.  Since then, he’s had a string of brilliant films where he’s been able to showcase his ability to act, as well as his comedic skills.  If you have any doubt about it, go watch Zombieland.

Now as strong as my appreciation for Bill is, IAM: fist_intheair definitely has me beat.  Nikko Hurtado from Hesperia, CA. did this piece on him recently, and I was floored when I saw it.

Regardless of your current feelings towards Bill, you must have some fond memory of at least one of his performances.  Was it his turn as Ernie McCracken in Kingpin?  Or maybe you’re a bit older and prefer him in Meatballs (fun fact:  I went to the camp across the lake from Camp White Pine outside Haliburton, ON, where Meatballs was filmed).  Obviously fist_intheair prefers Steve Zissou, so what was/is your favorite Bill role?

  • I don’t care if Monday’s blue

So here we are.  It’s the middle of August, and you can start to feel the summer fading away.  Sure we’ve got a few weeks of sun and fun left, but then fall will be upon us.  School is starting up again, patios won’t be open, and the days will start getting noticeably shorter.  Now don’t get me wrong, I love the fall.  It’s easily my favorite time of year, but the end of summer always make me sit back and contemplate those warm summer days and nights.

Maybe I just have a case of the Mondays.  Actually, no, I think I’m just overtired.  C’mon, there’s still a few weeks left, I still have time to go camping, sit out on the patio with friends, maybe make the trek down to the Canadian National Exhibition to get some Tiny Tom doughnuts.  Lots of things to do.  So who cares that it’s monday?  I sure don’t.

Then again, if you are feeling kind of blue because of the end of the weekend, maybe you can sympathize with this guy..

InkEverything uploaded this image last week along with a large collection of portrait tattoos.  Some of them are really fantastic, so if you’ve got some time to spare this morning head on over and check them out.

Hypothetically speaking, if I were to be suffering from a Blue Monday, what would be a good way to get myself out of the funk?

  • Shhh…

You’ll have to excuse my silence but my hard drive started failing last week and then went completely.  Now that I’m back up and running, I’m trying to get caught up on moderation again.  That’s just what I was doing when I came across this submission from SaD and I thought it was really cool!  The artist is Roman Fursov from Хорс in Lipetsk, Russia.  One of the best parts of moderating images for BME is getting to see the work that comes out of so many different countries. I’ve definitely noticed a rise in submissions from shops outside of the US and Canada and that’s fantastic!

I can’t place the girl but she’s very familiar to me. The portrait is based on the Wasp Queen doll by artist Virginie Ropars.  I love the shading on the face and in particular around her lips and the furrow of her brow.

  • Survey says…

I was looking at the posts on a Facebook group called Tattoo Acceptance in the Workplace.  It got me wondering and so I thought I’d pose some questions to you, dear ModBlog readers.  Are you tattooed?  If so, are any of them visible?  Are tattoos accepted in your workplace?  What industry do you work in?  Where in the world do you live?

I thought it might be interesting to see where visible tattoos are more accepted and where they are completely frowned upon.

I’m throwing in this sick (I hear that’s what kids these days call cool) and totally unrelated tattoo of Davy Jones, submitted by Gotter and inked by Jade Campos out of Arte Sagrado in Peru.

  • You can never grow old and you can never die, but you must feed!

Before vampires sparkled, they were cool. They wore leather and rode motorcycles and lived in a place called Santa Carla! To the wearer of this tattoo, I salute you! This was my favourite movie when I was a kid and remains so to this day. Ladies and gentlemen, I give you Max.

    More after the jump.

Rooster of Prick Tattoos in San Antonio, Texas sent these shots in. You can see a few more pieces in the portrait tattoo gallery on BME. Here are a couple more for you.

And I must end this post with the sexiest Lost Boy of them all, Dwayne.

I didn’t see any shots of David (though they may have been submitted prior to this batch) but I’m hoping we get to see more of this piece and I’d love to hear from the wearer about why they decided to pay tribute in ink to the greatest vampire film of all time.

Have a great weekend folks and hey, why not rent The Lost Boys (or if you own it like me pull it out of the dvd pile) for the sake of old times. Just don’t invite any vampires in to watch with you!

  • I have seen the moment of my greatness flicker

I’m just going to go ahead and say my immediate reaction to this tattoo was “Wow.”  The hands are really something and I’m a really big fan of this piece and the others that the artist, Alexandru Petcu, uploaded to BME.  He works out of Spunk Tattoo and you’ll have to get yourself to Bucharest if you want to get some work done by him.  Judging by this photo and the others he uploaded to BME, I’d say it would be worth the trip.

This photo was submitted combined like this but I’ve separated them and included another shot after the jump so you can get a closer look.

  • East Coast repping

Ok, I have no idea what that title really means but I was kind of excited to see a submission to BME from my neck of the woods, even if it does make me want to curl into the fetal position and cry. I kid, I have much love for Captain Spaulding. The photo was submitted anonymously but it was inked by Lil’ Dave of Peep Show in Oromocto, New Brunswick. That’s Canada yo! Fun fact. I once got into a car accident (totaled the car, taken to hospital by ambulance) on my way to a tattoo appointment with Lil’ Dave. I never did get that tattoo…

  • All that I am or ever hope to be, I owe to my angel Mother.

I can definitely see the resemblance here.  This photo was titled “Mother Tattoo” and was inked by Ryan Hadley out of Ryan Hadley Studio in Fort Wayne, Indiana.   (The quote I used in this title is attributed to Abe Lincoln.)

Continuing the theme of “why you should visit Montreal” are these incredible portraits by Melissa Valiquette out of Sin City in Montreal.

  • Is that you Han?

I really debated on posting this tattoo. I thought the customizations on it were pretty funny but Han Solo’s features are a bit off. There is something too “ethnic” about his nose and lips to be an accurate portrait of Hans Solo/Harrison Ford. What I’m not sure of though if that’s on purpose because of the bling bling chain. So it’s either a “hilarious” take on a sci-fi tattoo portrait, or.. not.
