A tattooed person suspends from hooks, laying flat, one leg higher than the other. Their head is back, and they seem to be smiling, dark hair dangling like an anime character.

  • Kick From Inside

And here we have a fine photo of a coma suspension presided over/facilitated by Matthew Vermillion, he of Artistic Skin Designs, Inc., which has locations all over the damn place in scenic Indiana. With the vast amount of suspension photography that exists out there, it’s always nice to see interesting takes on things we’ve seen many times before. And this? We like this.

Tattoo Hollywood, BME’s first tattoo convention, is coming to Los Angeles from August 21-23, featuring contests, prizes and some of the best artists from around the world! Click here for more information.

  • Night on the Sun

Well hey, it occurred to us that it’s been a minute since we’ve posted much in the way of suspension photography, but as luck would have it, the good folks of Poland’s Blissful Pain suspension team were apparently reading my thoughts or something and sent in this beautiful set of shots, some of which even feature our old friend Havve from Wings of Desire. Nothing particularly crazy here—just a lot of high-quality suspension shots, and hey, that’s good enough for us. More after the jump.

  • Help Matt Brawley and CoRE

Six weeks ago, the home/office of Matt Brawley, a member of suspension performance crew CoRE was devastated by a massive fire, causing thousands of dollars worth of damage both to Matt’s belongings as well as CoRE’s supplies. Steve Joyner and Patricia Cram have written the following piece detailing what happened and how you can help.

When Matt Brawley got the call from his landlord that told him his living/work space in downtown Los Angeles was on fire, he assumed, as many of us would, that the call was a joke. But his landlord abruptly hung up the phone and didn’t answer when Matt tried to call him back. Questions hammered at his head as he rushed out of the nightclub and raced home. What met his eyes, just after 3 a.m. on Saturday, May 16, eliminated all hope of it being a prank. The building in which he lived was, indeed, on fire.

The moments that followed were riddled with chaos as well as that silent reverence that comes from watching things burn and being helpless in the face of it all. He learned that the fire had started in his space, and that firefighters were working to contain it before it ravaged the homes of his neighbors (one of whom was a sound artist with a full recording studio, even). All production schedules and ideas for breakfast and plans for photo shoots and longing for sleep came to a screeching halt for Matt, the Director of the Los Angeles chapter of our performance art troupe, CoRE.

The fire spread quickly through the 2,000 square foot loft as firefighters cut a hole in the roof and worked to douse the flames. Unfortunately, the damage had already been done to Matt’s personal space, his business, and to CoRE, as all of our gear for the L.A. chapter was housed in his loft. Later, fire investigators determined that the fire was started by one of the surge protectors that ran some of the equipment for Matt’s personal computer business. (And we learned that surge protectors are not made to outlast a life of five years.)

In this inferno, Matt lost everything but some dishes and family photos. Fierce were those gods of fire who took the computing equipment that has been his work for many years, all of his clothing, his furniture, his paperwork, his books, his movies…. Though his business and sustenance were lost alongside the memories collected throughout a life, we have all been grateful that the devastation did not take any lives, or make ruins of any of his neighbors’ homes.

We placed hope in the thought that Matt’s wise investment in renters insurance would help recoup his, and our, losses. But we discovered that the policy covered Matt’s computer business only. Our Los Angeles chapter has been reduced to ashes. CoRE lost approximately $11,000 worth of equipment in this fire:

    – Flight cases
    – Rigging equipment (ropes, pulleys, daisy chains, gloves, hard hats, etc.)
    – Piercing equipment (hooks, needles, nitrile gloves, masks, equipment carts, custom PVC trace receptacles, a gurney, etc.)
    – Costuming (custom corseted wings, custom collars, dresses, etc.)
    – Makeup
    – Props
    – Set pieces
    – And, sadly, on and on…

Immediately after word of the fire reached us, we sent a letter to the suspension community in the hopes of raising funds, and have since been able to also host two benefit parties in Los Angeles. Donations have reached $1,700 for Matt and CoRE. Our emotions run deep with gratitude as we turn to you, our larger community and the industries therein, to ask for your help in rebuilding our L.A. chapter and to help get Matt back on his feet. He has endured a great loss, and it is because of the support of others that he has been able to move forward with as much staunch determination as he has. And it’s been a time of great mourning for more than just objects – we are having to start over now and work to cull the phoenix from the ashes of all the blood, sweat, and tears that our family in L.A. put into CoRE and the walls that held it. Thank you to all who have supported us in word and deed.

We have set up a Paypal account for donations HERE, and are enduringly grateful for any assistance you can spare in these skin-and-bones times.

For those who want to see some other media on the fire, there’s this report from an L.A. County news source.

  • All Darkness Near

Really beautiful set of photos here featuring the lovely Samar, who is no stranger to the ol’ ModBlog, with a suspension-assist by Erik Dakota and Andrea Costantino, who did the eight eight-gauge piercings involved here. Do we have a name for this variation yet? If not, well, think on it, ModBloggers. In the meantime, more pictures are just after the jump.

  • And Here Is Your Dallas SusCon Photo Update

Hey, it’s SusCon weekend in steamy Dallas, Texas, and while I couldn’t be there, lots of friends were, so let’s look at some photos of the festivities, yes? First of all, as we mentioned previously, Allen Falkner turned 40 yesterday, and what you see up there (in a picture by Angela Poon) is a project coming to fruition after three years in the making: Three years ago, BME’s own Phil Barbosa had that oversized portrait made and orchestrated having it sent all over the world with various travelers, picking up signatures at every stop, with the intention of surprising Allen with it on his fortieth birthday. And hot holy damn, it all worked! I haven’t received an official report about his reaction, but I can only assume that he has not stopped crying, seeing as he is old and infirm now. (Kidding!)

Take a peek after the jump for some more good stuff.

Oh, these photos are courtesy of Brian, who, as you can see, is up to his old tricks, molesting every young man that isn’t nailed down. Thanks Brian!

Earlier in the week, I mentioned that the ihung team would be building an even bigger PVC-pipe suspension dome than this one, and hey, there are Scot and Mikey, testing the structural integrity of the revamped version.

And there it is in all its glory. That is goddamn awesome.

It appears that, left to their own devices, the SusCon attendees quickly formed roving gangs. I believe this crew of outcasts prefer to be called “The Yellow-Jacket Boys.”

You may have noticed little ads on the side of the page over the last little while advertising a freak show/performance/etc. for Allen’s birthday and to kick off the SusCon, and this, of course, comes from that show. Here is Havve, who is one of the greatest performers around, offering a sober discussion on how the Norwegian banking system differs from the failing American model.

And here is a scary dinosaur of some sort, caught in one of Allen’s patented dinosaur traps. He will be thrown on a barbecue later on today, and devoured by everyone in attendance.

Check back soon for more updates!

  • Don’t Know If I Can

Well, this impressive. The ihung folks have been working with a gentleman named Ivan who conceived of this 25-foot-tall PVC-pipe dome structure, which is apparently based on some manner of sacred geometry forms, and have put it to use for suspension purposes. Rumor has it, they’ll be building an even bigger one this weekend at the Dallas SusCon. More photos, after the jump.

  • A Budding Morrow in Midnight

I really like this picture of some of the gents from Silas Body Art bouncing around on a triple spinning beam at the Galeria do Rock in Sao Paulo, Brazil—not just because it’s fun that all three have been caught in such different positions, but also because a three-person spinning beam is not the easiest thing to pull off!

  • Measure Pleasure by the Pain

Sorry about the late post, folks—somebody forgot it was the first day of Passover. Anyway, to round off a day of great faces, here we’ve got a happy gent just cold hangin’ during a resurrection suspension in sunny Costa Rica! Sleep tight, friends—should have some good stuff for you all tomorrow. Until then.

  • A Bard Before a Priest

I love this picture of Steve standing ominously over twin resurrection-suspendees Dani Danger and Cari at a recent Life Suspended gig at the Arizona Fetish Ball. I have to say, though, Steve’s outfit looks like it doesn’t breathe at all, especially in a hot nightclub—someone get this man a Snuggie!

  • Master Bait

None of my trademark music this time, the clapping and laughing says it all..

Just a good old fashioned video of Damien suspending (vaguely reminiscent of this, no?) with The Hanged Man Team during a “Live Bait” in Melbourne, Australia.
