A tattooed person suspends from hooks, laying flat, one leg higher than the other. Their head is back, and they seem to be smiling, dark hair dangling like an anime character.

  • Half full or Half empty? Lemons or Lemonade?

The fact is that surface piercings reject or are otherwise usually not kept permanently. The second fact is that there will usually be a scar left, ranging from something almost invisible to something that looks like a mole but slightly the wrong color.

When the surface piercings that Ron (at True Blue Tattoo) didn’t turn out, she had Kelley at World Famous Tattoo in Austin, TX improve her situation. I like the tattooed results and the way the dotted stars and negative space work with the scars from the piercings.

  • Wing Scarification

Now, I’ve mentioned time and time again that I think Dave Gillstrap is one of the most talented and cutting edge scarification artists working in the world today. However, and I feel terrible saying this, but when I see these angel wings on Allison, all I can think of is the hullaballoo about the “shell with hidden penis tattoo” a while back.

All I can think of though when I see the top of the wing (mostly because of the glans-defining blood droplet), is that it’s supposed to be a horse penis. I’m sure it will heal fine and of course it’s in part an illusion because of the blood, but in these fresh photos that’s all I keep seeing when I look… Ehhh… My mind is probably warped by looking at too many human penises.

But anyway, I think that piece will look amazng when it’s done, almost like the ghostly white shadow of wings on her back rather than an explicit image like you’d get with a tattoo.

  • Cherry Blossom Chest Scars

More amazing work from Wayde Dunn at Puncture Body Piercing in Australia.

  • Nice scars!

I like these picture of Marilyn Mena taken by SE photography in NYC… The lighting really makes the flowers (of course by Dave Gillstrap) jump out!

  • Celtic Rib Scarification, Healed

I have a couple more examples of really nice healed fine-line scarification work to post over the next little while, but let’s start with this one in a Celtic theme… That is why you’re looking at this picture, right? The healed cutting?

  • No Pain, No Gain

I guess the aritst at Snake Bite in Dublin told Karin that she had crooked collarbones. I don’t know. I can’t tell. But do you hear any complaints from me either way?

I don’t know that the gain got left out, but here’s some pain care of Peter Sheringham at Piercing Urge X in Melbourne Australia, who I’ve featured here regularly:

  • Ass Pig Branding

Done at Deepmetal Piercing in Dortmund, Germany.

Some of you will think this is funny, some of you will understand the hanky-type code.

  • Braille Scarification

This piece is by Lane Jensen at Dragon FX Kingsway Edmonton, Alberta, done using a combination of dermal punch and scalpel scar work. Oh, and if you can’t read braille, it says “Albert”.

  • Dune Tattoo (and brand)

I’ve been seeing a lot of Dune tattoos lately… I’m not sure what happened to bring about the resurgence, but I’m not complaining. My own simplified version of this reads Stay Calm. The main one pictured here is by Shawn at Mos Eisley Tattoo on Tatooine in Grand Rapids, MI. The branding (which basically says the same thing in Braille) is on an old friend scarred by Blair who is just finishing up a NYC tour.

    I must not fear.
    Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
    I will face my fear.
I will permit it to pass over me and through me.
And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
Where the fear has gone there will be nothing.
    Only I will remain.
