A tattooed person suspends from hooks, laying flat, one leg higher than the other. Their head is back, and they seem to be smiling, dark hair dangling like an anime character.

  • “Takedown This!”

[see also: on ModBlog or on Digg if you don’t get the context]

So… how do you DMCA a tattoo off of a person? Am I allowed to tell people that it’s a “09-f9-11-02-9d-74-e3-5b-d8-41-56-c5-63-56-88-c0 tattoo”? Is a magazine permitted to print photos of this tattoo? Can the tattoo artist or shop (Good Faith Tattoos, Boston) be sued? Can the person wearing the tattoo be sued? Can a corporation force a medical procedure (a tattoo removal)? Can they force him to always wear a shirt? Well, Rich from The New Freedom has decided to be the bait!

Edit: I’ve been told to submit this to Digg, but because (continuing in the “Digg loves censorship” meme) Digg has banned its users from linking to ModBlog because they find the content offensive, so it’s not gonna happen.

  • I wonder…

So we were just wondering here what would happen if someone got the HD DVD key tattooed on them. Any site that lists the AACS key/crack is getting legal takedown notices… if someone gets it tattooed, would a lawsuit forcing them to never show it to anyone be launched? Would they try and force a removal?

Well, email me your photo if you get it tattooed and feel like testing your fate!

Next weekend (May 5th – 6th) IAM members Ryan and Laura are participating in the MS150, a 150 mile bike ride between Dallas and Fort Worth, Texas, to raise funds for research into the cause and cure for Multiple Sclerosis, a degenerative disease of the central nervous system.

2.5 million people worldwide are affected by MS, including family members of IAM members, and likely some IAM members themselves.

They are accepting donations online here (Ryan) and here (Laura).

Donations can be as little as $1.

Visit their pages or click the donation links for more details.

  • Spirit+Flesh UK Tour

I just talked to Fakir Musafar earlier today and he mentioned that there are still some spots left in the UK dates of his Spirit+Flesh workshops and rituals next month (more here). You may recall he wrote about it in his column as well — the photo below is from that same mountain, of Grin from Chicago.

This tour will be the first time he’s toured the UK in over a decade. You can contact him via fakirtour.com which has all the details, or via his main site at fakir.org. Fakir is presenting and facilitating ritual in a way that perhaps offers different insights and experiences than the majority of suspension and ritual paths in the Western world… If this is what you’re looking for, there is no one more experienced.

  • Troy Amundson vs. The Government

“Versus” is a little misleading for the title, because Troy’s been working not against the government, but with it, as a lobbyist for the body art industry. Marisa from Needled had a chance to interview Troy about his efforts for her Legal Link column. Click on Troy to jump to the interview now.

  • Body Hacking Talk

For those that didn’t see the links on boingboing yesterday, Quinn posted her slides from the talk, and there’s also a video of it that you can watch. The slides are probably old news for anyone that’s been around BME for a while, but the video of the talk is very interesting and while it covers functional modification (Quinn also has magnetic implants), I found her comments on cutting and other things in that realm very insightful.

  • Kavadi Interview

Ego Kornus, who runs Kavadi Blog, just did this amazing interview with Carl Vadivella Belle about his many experiences carrying Kavadi. Click through for the interview.

  • Fame and Fortune

I got a message today about a movie that’s doing the film festivals now, about Steve Haworth‘s work. Steve makes the point in this trailer that he’s Constitutionally protected from prosecution (which may be the case, especially in Arizona, but that still has to be tested in court before it’s a definitive statement), but I wanted to remind practitioners that I strongly urge the oldschool “word of mouth referral only” method of promotion.

It should be a fascinating movie and I’m looking forward to seeing it, but every time a media product comes out into the mainstream world, I worry about what type of attention it’s going to bring, especially when it’s tightly focussed on one person’s activities. That said, at some point I guess a line is crossed where you should be able to make the case that it’s been publicly done for long enough that it’s all de facto legal until specific laws are written codifying what’s what… (BMEshop see also: MODIFY, Like a Butterfly, Dances Sacred and Profane, and the Nomad Piercing DVD; BMEnews see also: a recent extreme body modification prosecution).

  • “You can even win an Emmy!”

    Robin writes,

“I know my piercings aren’t insane, but I thought you would like to know that you can be a professional with piercings, and you can even win an Emmy!”

If you’re wondering, Robin won his Emmy in “outstanding visual effects in a miniseries or special” for his work on The Triangle. (See also: Pierced Scientists).

  • Lobes Censored!

So you may remember Candice, a beautiful UK-based model that I’ve featured here a few times before (see also: 1, 2, 3). Anyway, she recently did an advertising campaign for a university psychology research program… Much to her surprise (and irritation!) they actually Photoshopped her 28mm lobes out of the pictures completely and replaced them with ones that she thinks look hideous on her! I guess having stuff like this is part of the territory if you’re a model, but I just don’t understand why they’d hire someone with stretched ears just to edit them out later…
