A tattooed person suspends from hooks, laying flat, one leg higher than the other. Their head is back, and they seem to be smiling, dark hair dangling like an anime character.

  • Pretty Suspension Photos

Thanks to kinkyevil* for these really nice photos from the Wings of Desire Oslo SusCon. I’m not sure exactly what it is about these pictures (it’s not just the big BME banner, honest, or just being fooled by black-and-white), but I really like them a lot…

  • Psycho Cyborgs Photos

You may have seen one of them on the cover of BME, but because they’re so intense I wanted to share a few more of these Psycho Cyborgs performance photos care of IAM:madmax. They were taken by Regis Hertrich at Torture Garden in London, UK.

  • Jax Con 2005

Maxwell Brand from All Or Nothing* just sent me in some pictures he took at the 1st Annual Jacksonville Tattoo Convention. On the left is Cheryl, who’s gotten more work done since this photo was taken (more pictures will be posted in BME’s facial tattoo gallery when I get a chance). Next is Jacki and Johanna, and then the third photo is Elizabeth, part of the Oddity Ink crew. The last picture is Elizabeth with her friend Candice.

    * check their website for updates on their two artists that were recently in a major car crash.

  • Sao Paulo Tattoo Convention Pictures

In the previous entry I showed an amazing performance out of Argentina. I’d like to follow up in my “South America is awesome” theme here by sharing some great photos from my friend Osmar in Brasil. Some of the work is really amazing. These were taken at this year’s Sao Paulo convention, and you’ll see more early next week on BME as well.

  • Circus Carnis

Here’s a shot care of IAM:toddy of a Circus Carnis performance in Northbridge. It looks like a great performance, but I have to admit that it did take some flexing of my self control not to draw cartoon word bubbles and radically change the scene.

Theres nothing new under the sun. There are no new ideas, just new implementations. Scarification is a perfect example. Humans have been scarring themselves since the beginning of time. The cycle of things has in recent years brought scarification out of the closet and into the consciousness of the modification community. Practitioners have been working to perfect their craft and modification collectors have been planning what scar to make theirs.

    Why not do it together?

Scarwars1 wasnt what you typically think of as a convention. The event, hosted by Shawn Porter and staffed by a team of amazing volunteers, was an event unlike any other ever attempted. Over the weekend of May 19-21 a group of people connected by their desire to share in an art form yet to be perfected gathered in a little warehouse in Philadelphia to perform and partake in the act of scarification.

The results were amazing. What came out of the year of planning was a blending of artists and personalities and art and form that will live forever. Some of the most amazing scarification pieces ever performed were performed in our midst. Industry famous photographers Phil Barbosa and Allen Falkner lent their skill and eye to documenting the event. The results were some of the most amazing images ever captured. In addition to reveling in the art of scarification, we reveled in the company of each other. While the days were dedicated to hardcore art creation, the evenings were full of camaraderie.

So why let the east coast have all the fun?

  • Body Piercing for the Amish

Purple666 sent us this funny picture of a pierced beard, done at the first annual Porto Alegre Tattoo convention (that’s in Brasil for the geographically challenged).

  • REBEL! REBEL!

Photos by wildirishrose from the recent (Nov ’05) iHung suspension event in Cleveland.

  • Mexican Suspension Ritual

Since I mentioned Day of the Dead tattoos earlier this month, I thought I should also show this suspension performance that happened on Dia De Muertos in Tepic Nayarit, Mexico. Thanks to Karlin from Nomadas in Guadalajara for the photos.

  • Phuket Vegetarian Festival Photos

IAM:arco had a chance to head up to Phuket Thailand last month for the vegetarian festival (which involves, among other things, devotees having extremely large temporary piercings done in their cheeks into which elements of their lives are inserted). He’s written a little more about it on his page, and there is a full and growing gallery on BME as well.

Here are an assortment of some of my favorite pictures from the ones he took:
