A black-and-white photo of a person mid-air in a Superman-style body suspension pose, supported by multiple hooks in their back and legs, smiling joyfully toward the camera. They are suspended horizontally in a large indoor space with high ceilings and visible rigging. A group of onlookers—some seated, some standing—watch with expressions of admiration, amusement, and support. The atmosphere is lively and communal, capturing a moment of shared experience and transformation.
  • Mini-interview with Nick Lott

A lot of Modblog readers have told me how much they enjoy the mini-interviews I have done. I guess it’s a sign of the times that people like nice short single serving pieces. When I stumbled across Nick’s IAM page, my first thought was “who’s this buff little dude who’s not Emry’s?” Upon further inspection I found out he was a piercer, a body builder and a skydiver amongst other things. Interesting enough right? So without further ado, a mini-interview with Nick.

    mail-2

For the interview, keep on keeping on.

Sean: Let’s start with the basics: Age, sex, location, where you work

Nick: 25. Male. Salt Lake City, UT. Iris Body Piercing.

Sean: How did your interest in body mods start?

Nick: I’ve had an interest in piercing since I was a really young kid. I begged my mom to let me get my ear pierced when I was 6 years old. The first time I saw someone with stretched ears, it blew my mind. I was completely fascinated with it. I liked that having piercings made me look different and set me apart from other people.

Sean: What mods do you have personally?

    Nick: 2″ Ear Lobes, 0g Helixes, 1/2″ Nostrils, 14g Philtrum, 9/16″ Labret, 8g Reverse PA, 4x 10g Frenums, 2x 14g Dydoes, 2x 12g Dydoes, Tongue Splitting, Meatotomy, 3x 1/4″ Sub-Dermal Implants in Chest, Branding on Arms and Chest, Tattoos…

    mail1

Sean: How did you get into piercing as a career?

Nick: I was a shop rat. I hung out at the shop and got pierced all the time. I was friends with the people who worked at the studio. One day, Dustin, who I now pierce with, came out and said “We’re going to apprentice you, so you should be ready for that.” That was 8 years ago, and I’ve been piercing ever since.

Sean: How would you define yourself as a piercer? What sets you apart?

Nick: I love taking my time and paying attention to detail. It’s important to realize that every client is different, both personally and anatomically.

We’ve been teased for being “elitists.” I really don’t see how that word can be taken as an insult. We pride ourselves on our commitment to never stop learning and to do the best job possible. We’re happy to surpass industry standards in every aspect of our studio. All piercers at the shop are APP members. All of our piercing jewelry is F-136 Titanium, and of course is internally threaded. We don’t sell any externally threaded jewelry at our shop. I never get tired of hearing “I’ve never been in a shop like this before.”

    mail-3Vertical Labret by Nick

Sean: When and why  did you get into body building?

Nick: I’ve never really thought of myself as a “Body Builder.” I started being serious about exercise when I was 19. I had gone through a really difficult break up and was extremely depressed. I started going to the gym, and I’d just work out until I was too tired to care about being sad. So it started with making exercise a habit. Habit progressed into something that I became passionate about. Passion evolved into setting goals and working hard to obtain them.

    mail-1

Sean: How does the body building fit into other forms of body mod?

Nick: I think that taking care of your body makes you appreciate it even more. Think about when you stretch your ears, or you get a new tattoo, and you really like the “new you” that you see in the mirror. Exercise is a lot like that, except you’re the one who has done the work to make the changes you’re seeing. I think that having a nice body helps to accent the other changes you’ve made to yourself. Pretty tattoos on a fit, sexy body look way better to me than the same tattoos on someone who is unhealthy and out of shape.

Much thanks to Nick for taking the time to do this brief interview. As soon as I can catch Brian Skellie on Skype, I hope to bring you guys an amazing and detailed interview by one of the most influential and educated piercers around.

  • Anchors Aweigh

Considering an anchor is a big weight meant to hold a ship in place, it makes you wonder if the 80 microdermals in this anchor hold her down at all?  Oh, that’s not a typo, I counted, and there are indeed 80 in place.

This project was put together by Bart Bastiaanse from Tribal Trading bv in Tilburg, The Netherlands.

I guess this puts new meaning to the term “surface anchor”

  • Feel the magic, hear the roar!

    Thunder..  Thunder..  Thunder..  ThunderCats HOOOO!!!!!

To call ThundaKat79 a fan of the ThunderCats is a bit of an understatement.  With both her chest and back dedicated to the heroes of Third Earth, its safe to say that she loved one Saturday morning cartoon more than the others.  Just a quick note, her chest isn’t complete yet, so hopefully we’ll get a look at it again when it is finished.

KINGS AVENUE TATTOO SHOP OPENS ON BOWERY

Travel far back enough in time and the high-end boutiques and martini bars of the Bowery disappear. Decades before there was a CBGBs – much less a John Varvatos boutique in its former footprint – the Bowery was America’s most notorious “skid row.” Crime flourished in the alleyways, derelicts lay dying in the gutters and sailors on shore-leave stopped by the neighborhood for assorted vice and a tattoo before shipping off to sea.

While that era is long gone (and few lament its passing), one thing worth celebrating has returned to the Bowery: tattooing.

On April 1st, KINGS AVENUE NYC opened its doors at 188 Bowery to a reveal a beautiful, open-loft floor plan to the public. Framed paintings decorate the walls and with its black glass chandeliers and oriental carpets, KINGS AVENUE NYC doesn’t look the rough-and-tumble shops of the old Bowery – nor is it the place to get a crude anchor quickly scratched into your forearm. This is a pristine gallery space where fine-art is being created on skin seven days a week.

Sharing a name with the flagship location in Massapequa, Long Island, KINGS AVENUE NYC was founded by tattooist and international award-winner, MIKE RUBENDALL, with his associate, GREZ, a well-respected tattooist in his own right. While people have traveled from all over the world to visit their Long Island location for everything from a full-scale Japanese body-suit to a modestly-sized, classic nod to Americana flash, RUBENDALL explains that they opted to open a second shop on Bowery, “for the simple fact of wanting to be a part of the energy, life, and creativity that Manhattan possesses.”

KINGS AVENUE NYC will also feature the work of resident artists MATT BECKERICH, JUSTIN WEATHERHOLTZ, BRIAN PAUL, SHAUN NEL, KEVIN LEBLANC and SARAH SCHOR – a talented collective that has adorned the bodies of notables like actress EVAN RACHEL WOOD, hip-hop empresario DAMON DASH and rocker PETE WENTZ of FALL OUT BOY. The public can also expect to see guest appearances from renowned  artists like CHRIS O’DONNELL, TIM HENDRICKS and Denmark’s HENNING JORGENSON as well as “celebrity” tattooists such as CHRIS NUÑEZ (Miami Ink) and KAT VON D (L.A. Ink). Artists will be present to accept unscheduled “walk-in” clients, but due to their individual waiting lists, clients are encouraged to contact the artists at KINGS AVENUE NYC in advance.

Sure, the Bowery has gotten a make-over in the past few years, but now it can also get a beautiful tattoo.

    ~
Located at 188 Bowery at the corner of Spring Street, KINGS AVENUE NYC is open from 12pm-9pm on Monday through Saturday and 1pm until 7pm on Sunday. The shop can be reached by telephone at (212) 431-5464 or online at www.kingsavenuetattoo.com.

The KINGS AVE NYC logo, web- and print-ready images of the shop and samples of the artists’ work is available for download at www.briangrosz.com/kingsave

  • The Friday Follow-up

Oh what a tangled web we weave.  Three years ago, when Anders did this heart/web combination, who could have thought it would turn out the way it did.

Three years is a pretty long time, which makes this follow-up one of the longest time differences so far.  Keep on reading to see how it healed up.

What I think is most interesting is that the heart appears to have puffed out slightly, while parts of the web appear almost indented into the skin.  There are more photos of this scar in Anders’ portfolio gallery if you want some closer looks.

  • Looking for work?

    BME is hiring!!

Specifically we’re looking for someone to be our lead programmer.  So if your Python skills are up to par, and you meet the other requirements, let us know.

BME has spent the last 3 years redeveloping its web presence from the ground up. Throughout the process there have been a lot of detours as well as the predictable bumps in the road. BME is looking for a lead programmer to integrate with our development group that has helped to program the new site. You will work with our current company to learn the new site as well as to help finish the deployment of all of BME’s 2.0 rebirth. After the development company has been phased out, you will be responsible for maintenance and changes to the existing site and software. You will also be responsible for programming new features, debugging and developing/programming new sites that will come with BME’s growth. As BME doesn’t have a “main office”, all of our staff work from home. This is a big bonus for most of us and has worked well over the past decade.

    Requirements:

    • Diligence and attention to detail.
    • Multi year senior level programming experience in python (as well as C/C++).
    • Core competencies in Python.
    • Excellent HTML/CSS/JS skills and an interest and awareness of emerging web standards.

    • Experience with linux based web architectures.
    • Experience in Java and .NET an advantage.
    • Experience of deploying and maintaing websites with Apache, Linux, and either Postgres or MySQL, and development with frameworks such as Django.
    • A real appreciation of clean, well-tested, well-documented code.

    Useful Experience:

    • SQL database management
    • Database administration
    • Linux administration

    Benefits:

    • Working in a mod friendly and positive environment.
    • Working in a small private company with international reputation in the Body Modification Community.
    • Exposure to some of the most exciting aspects of the industry.
    • You can work from home! This can be a part time job for extra income while you maintain a full time job as unfortunately, BME isn’t in a position to offer health care, 401k or other retirement benefits.
    • You won’t have to come into BME HQ but you will have a ticket to attend BME’s main events (BMEfest/ModProm etc)!
Please send your resume, availability and salary requirements to [email protected] with the subject line “Python Position Applicant”.

Seeing as how a python is a type of snake, here’s a snake scar from Lassi‘s BME Artist Portfolio.

  • Step right up!

Next up is the daring Inga!  In a breathtaking move, Inga will transition from an embryo suspension, into a knee suspension.

And that’s just a small tease of what you can expect to find when you go to the #Leeds Suspension Team gallery on BME!  See Inga fly through the air as her ropes are cut out from above her!  Watch as clowns soar overhead!  Experience the breathtaking beauty of suspensions like you’ve never seen before!

  • April means cherry blossoms

Around this time every year, all across the world, cherry trees begin to blossom.  The blossoms themselves can mean different things to different people, which is probably why they’ve become something of a staple image for tattoos.  Here with her own take on the cherry blossom tattoo is Joey Pang from Tattoo Temple in Hong Kong.

  • So very, very cold

It’s one thing to do a suspension outdoors in winter.  It’s a completely different thing to do a tandem suspension outdoors in the middle of a Russian winter at night.

Of course it’s The Sinner Team!  This is just one of a number of winter suspensions that they’ve sent in photos of over the past week.  Check out their BME gallery to see more of their winter fun.

  • Taking it back

I love it when people add stories to their photo submissions.  While not every photo needs a story attached, but when there is one, it can completely change your perception of the contents of the photo.

ldready recently sent in this photo of their newest tattoo.  What you’re looking at is the back of the neck with a depiction of a thyroid gland.  You see, ldready lost their thyroid to cancer over a year and a half ago, so this tattoo is an opportunity to get it back.

As you can see, knowing the story behind this tattoo enables you to not only understand why this person wanted a thyroid tattooed on their neck, it also lets you know that this isn’t an Alien egg.
