A black-and-white photo of a person mid-air in a Superman-style body suspension pose, supported by multiple hooks in their back and legs, smiling joyfully toward the camera. They are suspended horizontally in a large indoor space with high ceilings and visible rigging. A group of onlookers—some seated, some standing—watch with expressions of admiration, amusement, and support. The atmosphere is lively and communal, capturing a moment of shared experience and transformation.
  • One of our own wants wants to interview….. you, perhaps?

We frequently, get request from students asking for us to help them contact modified people to interview for their thesis or whatever. Sometimes, we post them, sometimes we don’t. However, when one of our own ask for our help, we will always happily oblige.

Tigricula, sent us this request, not only is she an IAM member and part of the modded community, but she emphasizes her respect for the individuals being interview and is even offering a small monetary compensation for their time. That speaks volumes, compared to the usual request sent in by psych majors trying to prove anyone with stretched ears MUST have been touched inappropriately by their family members, or whatever foolish hypothesis they want to put forth.

I am a PhD student in library and information science, and I’m currently researching how people get information about body modification procedures. I’m particularly interested in how people research some of the more intense procedures, like tongue splitting, ear pointing and genital modifications. I’m looking for people to interview about the role of technology, the internet and social media in terms of finding out about body modification practices. Interviews could be done in person (if you’re on the East Coast of the US) or virtually (Skype or chat), and I’m able to offer people $30 as an honorarium for their time and help. If this sounds like something that would interest you, please get in touch with me at [email protected] or on IAM, username tigricula.

One last thing – I’ve participated in the body modification scene for nearly a decade, and I’m grateful to both the online and offline facets of this community for being a place where I’ve made some really important friendships. I also happen to be a PhD student who studies information and subcultures. I point this out to say that respect for this community is really important to me, as is confidentiality of participants. Please feel free to contact me with any questions about or suggestions for how I’m conducting research on this project.

  • BMEFest is Back!!!

You read that right!  This summer marks the return of the infamous BMEFest, and you’re all invited!  The event page has all the little details, but here are some of the highlights:

    • Lots of room for tents
    • Swimming pool
    • Bonfire (That I will NOT be jumping in this time)
    • Food will be provided, but only the basics like burgers, veggies, and chicken.  If you want something else, feel free to bring it.  Oh, and if you’re over 21, bring the booze (just don’t drive afterwards)
    • Suspensions/Pullings – The space is there, just need some practitioners to sign on and bring equipment.
    • And last but not least… BOUNCY CASTLES!!!  SLIP’N’SLIDES!!! AND MORE!!!

BMEtv will also be set up interviewing people, so if you’re interested, just let Rachel know in the event forum.

BMEFest is going to be a big family reunion, a time to get caught up with some old friends, and a place to make new ones.  The party starts on Saturday July 2nd, and goes until Monday night.

And because this is a family reunion, here’s a tattoo celebrating family by Sagie from Walk the Line Tattoo Parlour in Sweden.

So what are you waiting for?  Head on over to the event page and RSVP today!

  • Red Hot Tuesday

    Oh hey look, it’s Madison!

Since moving away from the east coast, she’s added some new work by Rob Vino from Matamata Studio in Hamilton, ON to go along with the pieces Scott Forbes from Oceanic Art in Nova Scotia did.

  • Aren’t you a little short for a stormtrooper?

Stormtroopers take their commitment to the Galactic Empire very seriously.

The Imperials have employed scarification artist Kcir to mark each trooper with the symbol of the empire.

  • Squeee!

    How freaking cute is this?!

Sagie from Walk the Line Tattoo Parlour in Sweden created this adorable little owl.  And for the record, that was a manly “squeee”.

  • Holy crap it’s a tiger! Get in the car!

I’ve been posting a lot of work by Roger from Star City Tattoos in Roanoke, VA lately, and this is just one of the reasons why.  He’s consistently submitting fantastic works of art, in a number of different styles.  The thing I like most about this tiger is how he used negative space in the background to create the bamboo forest.  There also isn’t any visible outlining done, which gives it the feel of a painting, rather than a tattoo.

  • Knotted bands of flesh

I really like how Azl managed to turn this traditional Celtic design into a really impressive scar.  You really get a sense that if you were to peel away at one of the edges, the whole thing would come up as a single twisted piece.

  • I never drink… wine

While it may not stick to Bram Stoker’s novel completely, the 1931 film Dracula has probably influenced more portrayals of the count than the novel ever has.  Of course the reason for this is Bela Lugosi’s portrayal of the count.  His widow’s peak, high collared cloak, and broken english, all gave birth to the icon we know and love.  Plus, he never sparkled.

Thanks to Roger from Star City Tattoo for this recreation of this iconic image.

  • Summertime, and the living is easy

Is it summer yet?  It sure feels that way with all the construction going on.  For seeingred, he’s taking advantage of the great weather and kicking off his summer a little early.

  • Eye Spy…

Now you’ve got to be asking yourself, what could possibly be so interesting that I’d need to open up my horribly outdated copy of photoshop?

Well, lets put it this way.  I couldn’t decide if it counted as a wildlife tattoo or not, but it definitely is some kind of animal.

This interpretation of a scorpion was done by Jackie Rabbit, Star City Tattoo, Roanoke, VA.
