A black-and-white photo of a person mid-air in a Superman-style body suspension pose, supported by multiple hooks in their back and legs, smiling joyfully toward the camera. They are suspended horizontally in a large indoor space with high ceilings and visible rigging. A group of onlookers—some seated, some standing—watch with expressions of admiration, amusement, and support. The atmosphere is lively and communal, capturing a moment of shared experience and transformation.

Opticon – I’ve just asked a Norwegian I know if they can help translate it (my Norwaygian is basic at best) – Watch this space..

Really though, you won’t gain much from a translation. It’s all about the visuals 🙂

“but honestly the show seemed pretty offensive. i have absolutely no problem with heavily moded people performing for other moded people or even those without mods who are genuinely interested in the culture, but this show seemed to be showing these great performance artists as sideshow circus freaks.”

What do you have against freaks and oddities or them performing for a show that could get other people interested in their art? Why should they limit themselves to one audience? One has to constantly perform before new crowds with new acts lest one wears out their welcome.

Didn’t you notice the banners in nice banner stands in the background using traditional sideshow buzzwords like “Alive”, “Why” and “Real” as well as more or less traditional sideshow designs for their banners? Those banners could have easily set them back $250 apiece thrice. It seems to me that they chose purposefully to present their acts in a sideshow or vaudeville light instead of the more popular tribal. Not everyone is a modern primitive or draws their inspiration from first peoples.

Maniac eats a lightbulb, Princess Scars can lay on a bed of nails and the Head Master is a bladewalker. Without a doubt in my mind, this is a sideshow troupe.

Back in the 20′s and 30′s, a sideshow was a marvelous place for a person with a “disability” or an unusual talent to make a very decent living performing two or three times a night. I personally respect made freaks and working acts a lot because I am one and I understand how difficult it is to come up with something original and yet traditional.

When P.T. Barnum ran into protests over him using the word “freak” to bill his freaks in America, he switched to using “Prodigy”, which is what the protesters were suggesting. They still performed the same acts and feats. A rose by any other name…

“those guys should be appricated for more than the fact that they are different than your “average” Norweigian.”

They are… they’re performing acts that any Norwegian could learn to perform, but won’t as most of their acts are working acts.

“Maybe i’m off base here and i probably have no right to say anything without knowing the artists or being able to understand what the hell the anchors were saying but i just felt like i was watching a freak show and not the beautiful performance that was actually going on.”

Context, my dear, context. They’re great because they have recreated entertainment from an era whose heyday was pre-WWII for your amusement. Maybe you would have preferred a natural, tribal setting, but that preference does not invalidate their preference. They seem to prefer a stage. I prefer to set the vast majority of my body mod experiences in underground clubs, on stage and in or near abandoned buildings.

Pure Cirkus (Seattle) does a lot of the same acts, but they’re a bit more tribal/mystical as opposed to vaudeville in their approach. I do wonder how BME would react to their videos.

    Stormchaser:

Eating a lightbulb, like most of the acts, is a matter of practice and knowing the right information (aka “advanced technology”). It’s real glass, real mouth.

I learned how from a glass walker/glass eater/windex drinker, but that took several months of contacting them before they gave me the necessary hints, many careful warnings and actually doing it before they told me a few helpful hints. It’s an act that one has to do very carefully and thoroughly lest one suffer later for a few days. As for bleeding to death, an amateur who does not have the knowledge I have would probably suffer for a while.

He also has a tongue split. When mine was split, there was a thousand times more blood than from when I had a cut from a lightbulb. You simply learn how to manipulate the glass.

Some magicians unnecessarily will gaff it because they’re essentially jugglers. Any sufficiently advanced technology can appear to be magic.

Naturally, DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME! GO TO YOUR FRIEND’S HOUSE!
