Yeah, I really hope that Natalie gets kicked off BB9 tonight. But anyway…
The script in this tattoo by Brian at Atomic Age in Mechanicsburgh, PA, reads “This I Know”, like the song, explains the wearer…
I was on a plane leaving the French West Indies after a month-long cross cultural college course. We were headed for Philadelphia, but there was an electrical short in the cockpit when the plane was somewhere over the Bermuda Triangle. The smell of melting plastic and smoke filled the cabin and we thought we were going down for a watery death in the Atlantic. I was terrified with most of the other passengers. One man even wrote up his will a few seats ahead of me.
The college group I was with from Messiah College started singing “Jesus loves me, this i know, for the Bible tells me so.” Hearing that song reaffirmed my faith and brought me a solace I never thought I could feel in a time like that. I told myself that if I lived through the experience, I was going to get that tattooed. That song states such a foundational understanding of my Christianity and because the whole experience tested my faith, I realize how vital my relationship is with my Creator. God brought me through that, and now I have a permanent reminder that I know I am loved.
I’ve heard of plenty of people promising God they’d be good Christians if they survived whatever, but this might be the first time I’ve heard of someone promising God they’d get tattooed if they survived!

Heather:
That’s not actually what I meant, although my phrasing was not particularly clear. How about:
“The adherents of religion want it to be given equal weight…”? That’s what I was getting at.
I agree for the most part that religion has no inherent evil to it. Your description of science as “a system of understanding phenomena by breaking them down until we can hopefully grasp the causes and effects and the why’s and hows of what is happening” is a good one, but that same description cannot be applied to any religious doctrine or organisation.
Religion has no methodology and doesn’t find the answers to anything in any realistic sense. You can’t just throw a bunch of random illogical shit out there as an explanation for how the world works and rely on the fact that it can’t be disproven as a justification for its plausibility. Well, you can, but don’t expect your whacked-out ideas to be given the same weight as those that have been logically and meticulously researched on the basis of real evidence.
That is why I objected to your statement that that religion and science are “both different methods of working out the same problems”.

Also, I don’t think that scientists claim a monopoly on truth to nearly the same extent that Christians and other theists do. Compare:
Evolutionist: Given the evidence, this is the most likely way that humanity came into existence. Evolution is a theory but it’s the closest fit we have.
Creationist: Given no evidence whatsoever, this ABSOLUTELY IS WHAT HAPPENED. It is not a theory; we know for a fact that this happened.

Can’t people just enjoy the tattoo and keep their ranting debates to themselves?
No one’s opinions are going to change because of this bitching, so whats the point?
I’m an atheist, to be honest I have similar opinions to most of the people bashing christianity, but I have enough respect for other people’s beliefs and lives to keep my damn mouth shut about it!
Why not just stop stirring up trouble and just enjoy the tatt and the awesome hair. ^_^
although as a side note i think he should get a second tattoo of the pilot’s name. XD

“That is why I objected to your statement that that religion and science are “both different methods of working out the same problems”.”
religion is how some people choose to understand life, and science is how some choose to understand life.
the reasons you’re here, your place in this world.
they are both methods of working out the same problems.

religion had many different methodology to finding many different problems, and finds a lot of realistic answers in support for various causes around the world.
but struggling with issues like the nature of man, or whether or not abortion is immoral aren’t questions with quantifiable variables – expecting solid, real, absolute facts in religion is foolishness. you’d never expect your romantic partner to quantify their love for you and prove it at every turn. it changes every day and grows and flows and ebbs.
science can never tell you how to live a good life – any “good” atheist can not argue their morality based on science because you cannot base morality around science.
i’m throwing nothing out there but what i believe to be the truth and what works for me, and i am saying my faith makes me happy and makes me a better person and that that is realistic and solid and enough for me.

Hi, my name is something or other and I am a follower of Christ who likes to read ModBlog.
If I am ever fortunate enough to meet the wearer of this tattoo, I will give him a hug and rejoice with him because of his faith. He just seems like a cool guy, you know? I mean, he goes to another continent to get a different perspective on life, and then commemorates his more-important-than-his-life faith with the beauty of a needle and ink. I hope to soon join him.
On this whole “Science v. Religion” thing, why is there even a conflict? The creation declares clearly about its Creator, but not everyone will listen. So guess what? Only those that listen get to hear the message. Study Science, and you get to hear more of this message than someone who does not. Besides, any written Biblical account of creation is written from and for theological purposes, not for hard science. For a more scientific account, study science.
This is only to my fellow followers of Christ: Please stop making God on your side and hurting those not (yet) among us, if you are. You are really only bringing dishonor to our family. Thanks to those that won’t do these things.
/goes on singing about that “…typical tat-too green…”

Wow…this guy isn’t all that far from me… I’d love to meet him. That’s a really deep tattoo. I doubt I’ll ever be able to see that song in the same light anymore. Brownie points to the guy as well for being that open about his faith. So many people hide theirs. These people that hide are asking to be mocked.
But seriously. Why must you constantly bash others for personal beliefs(if you are the one bashing that is) ? This guy chose to get a tattoo because it means something to him, NOT because he thinks YOU, the reader, has to believe too. And somehow you get offended. You’re really not much better than the person who is supposedly pushing their beliefs on you. Obviously, you’re insulted… so you feel the need to whine incessantly. Why? By telling someone who believes something else to shut up, or by making fun of them, you are doing to them what you would NEVER want happening to you. So freaking get over it and go make fun of the real idiots in the world, and let someone like this believe… for when we have nothing to believe in, and we give up our personal beliefs and identity, we have nothing left. Whether Christianity is true or not isn’t the point of my argument either. A person can believe anything and get bashed for it. The bashing comes from an unwillingness to look beyond oneself… to see the other as another individual with their own values. It’s pretty sad to watch.
