A black-and-white photo of a person mid-air in a Superman-style body suspension pose, supported by multiple hooks in their back and legs, smiling joyfully toward the camera. They are suspended horizontally in a large indoor space with high ceilings and visible rigging. A group of onlookers—some seated, some standing—watch with expressions of admiration, amusement, and support. The atmosphere is lively and communal, capturing a moment of shared experience and transformation.

I’m glad to learn that its fake.

It isn’t crass to post pretend violence submitted by the person pictured. I mean, she did submit it to a website to be posted on the internet for people to see.
If someone had beat her up and submitted pictures it would definitely be time to get our panties up in a twist.

And, since its fake, its kinda hot.

    Wrong.

Images (whether pretend or real) of beaten women only contribute to the culture of ignorance surrounding it. Take a look at the reactions from the usual suspects

“I wont be able to masterbate(sic) to it then”
“Shes(sic) very pretty. Bruises and all.”
“What do you tell a girl with two black eyes? Nothing you already done told her twice! Har har har.”
“I’ve always thought black eyes are kinda hot.”

We know that the majority of Modblog contributors are low in intelligence but the reactions to this and previous similar entries show just how immature some of them are.

I dunno, Giles. I think when it comes to what people find sexy no one should have any say as to whether it’s crass, wrong or immature. I mean, isn’t acceptance what this site is all about? Although we’re all entitled to our own opinions, so spout off all you want.
I think it’s sexy myself, and I am a woman who enjoys getting black eyes from her boyfriend. Is it ignorant of me to go after something I like and to enjoy looking at it (albeit fake) in someone else? Since we know the back story of this photo, I don’t see how it’s contributing to cultural ignorance

Giles, must you complain about everything?

Cere is clearly joking, that “nothing you haven’t told her twice” joke is so old that I don’t even get offended by it anymore, and saying black eyes are hot doesn’t mean domestic (or whatever) abuse is hot. You can get a black eye from getting hit in the head with a piece of fruit. For reals.

Does it get lonely up there on your high horse?

Kelli – No offence Kelli but I don’t see the joke with regards to images of beaten women.

Of course Cere was joking, he is part of the culture whereby violence against women is treated as a joke.

I realise you may not see the harm in it but that does not mean it doesn’t exist.

I find the assumption that women mainly get black eyes from domestic abuse strangely offensive.

We are not delicate flowers. Most of us love a bit of rough and tumble as much as any man. I’m always covered in bruises from adventures and gigs and I’d be pissed off to think anyone presumed they were from getting my arse kicked by some macho man.

I’ll do the arse kicking thanks very much, and wear any bumps and scrapes I get along the way with pride.

Nobody claimed “that women mainly get black eyes from domestic abuse “, that in itself was an assumption made on your part.

I am against the culture of joviality that often accompanies images such as these. Also the image above is leading to a ‘preferred’ interpretation of it although it is polysemic image that allows the ‘artist’ to claim whatever message they choose. Essentially it clearly hints toward being a manufactured image of domestic abuse but with a small feeling of ambiguity to allow those responsible to distance themselves from responsibility.

As far as I’m concerned if the person submitting the photo (as a female) is happy with the submission of a photo featuring bruises then there’s no problem. I wonder whether people would be in such a stink over a dude submitting a photo like this?

Whatever, it’s a nice shot anyway.

Surely context is everything, Giles? e.g. self submitted, acknowledgement that it’s makeup, Shannon’s FP comments on context…etc etc etc. It would be different if was actually about a beaten woman. Don’t be so reactionary.

Giles, I’m confused as to how me posting makeup skills is insinuating that I am a victim of domestic abuse.
Like others have stated, you wouldn’t be coming down as hard on a male if he had a black eye in a photo. There should be no difference unless I had stated this was a result of domestic abuse.
And don’t feed me the line ‘a picture is worth a thousand words’ because there is already a caption stating that it is indeed fake.

Um, why does a picture of a chick with bruises have to point to “female voilence”? Hell it could be badges of honor like “Fuck yeah I had fun the mosh pit” or maybe she just came back from a wrestling match. (Of course this is assuming we didn’t know she was praticing her make-up skills). There is in no way anything else in the photo giving one the idea of domestic violence. Some people just look for the worst in everything so they have something to complain about.

And to expand on my thought, I think the people that look at this and automatically think domestic violence are extrememly sexist in the fact that they think that seem to only think of a bruised woman as someone who got their ass kicked by a man than someone who recieved her bruises in the name of fun or exercise.

    1) By posting the picture up on ModBlog Shannon you are elevating it to a position where it IS being celebrated whether it was your intention or not. Again look at the first 20 odd comments and ask whether or not it has been taken as chic.

    2) Burcu – Irrespective of whether the picture is fake it is still meant to represent a female who has been beaten, hence the black eye and split lip. If your intention was to show anything else then you have not made it clear, the text is quite clear in what it is supposed to represent and the preferred interpretation is quite obvious.

    3) Pictures of women with bruises or pretend bruises do not make good pictures for the baying public to comment, wolf-whistle and assess.

4)My own form of abstract expression has absolutely no basis in pretend violence whatsoever, it does not mimic the look of a beaten man.

    5) Violence against women is a very real and very structured part of society that requires sensitivity and maturity to address. This “make-up tip” and similar posed images posted here do NOTHING to redress or question the situation in any positive light. They simply demand attention whilst washing their hands of any responsibility.
