Hhahaa that’s great!
I know someone that cauterized a toe amputation this way (not that I’m recommending it — it was a crazy neighbor when I was a kid, not a BME person)…

Wouldn’t there be some nasty residue left over after that?

Hard to say in terms of residue without the specific composition used – I’m pretty sure this isn’t straight “gunpowder” in the saltpeter/charcoal/sulfur sense. Unless I’m wildly mistaken, this has to be a smokeless powder Pyrodex or some other modern replacement.
Residue isn’t usually that amazingly toxic from modern powders, though I’m not thinking FDA approval is going to hit soon or anything. It’s anyones guess really if it’s modern – some potassium nitrates/nitrites and sulfate/sulfides and unreacted stuff from the originals (amazing as it seems given the reaction, no powder burns completely). It may even help scar more, after all rubbing residue from fires into cuts/burns/scrapes to produce scars is a time-honored process.

Sayid did that on LOST, to close a cut when there wasn’t a chance for stitches. It’s interesting to see it for real.

Holy cow. I can’t believe how still that guy managed to stay while they lit that. That must’ve been incredibly painful

Yes but it doesn’t seem to have last more than 3 or 4 seconds. An electrocautery branding looks far more painful.

Larry it was gun powder straight out of shot gun shells. Actually wasn’t that painful abit more than a branding thats about it was so dissappointed thought it was going to be way worse.

That wasnt as scary as I thought it would be… I envisioned something going BOOM! Obviously I know bugger-all about gunpowder, haha. Nice twist – would also like to see how it heals.
