A black-and-white photo of a person mid-air in a Superman-style body suspension pose, supported by multiple hooks in their back and legs, smiling joyfully toward the camera. They are suspended horizontally in a large indoor space with high ceilings and visible rigging. A group of onlookers—some seated, some standing—watch with expressions of admiration, amusement, and support. The atmosphere is lively and communal, capturing a moment of shared experience and transformation.

Action or Inaction?

You can see the full detail pictures on BME and on Mouthsores‘ page, but Mana’s chest piece by Travis Bracht at Spirit Garden Too in Northfield, MN is a coffin that says, “If you don’t live for something, You die for nothing”. I don’t know if that’s true or not (although especially in tattoos I hear it a lot); some people have suggested that the exact opposite is closer to the right way to think of life.

To spin off that thought of Shannon’s…
Perhaps if an individual is religious, that quote would be accurate, as that “something” being God.
That being said, I actually agree that living for “nothing” actually gives an indiidual a greater sense of self, and therefore empowerment and control.
However, philosphical questions usually don’t belong on ModBlog!

    So I agree, kickass shirt!

Hey, tattoos make people think about things — I say it’s a perfect place for philosophy 🙂

Reminds me of Hatebreed’s “Live for this.” Which yes, I will admit to listening to.

of course this is a perfect place for philosophy! i was exstatic with the fact that i was able to relate almost every aspect of my ‘bio-politics: human nature in contemporary thought’ course to body modification and thus use it as an research essay. a good topic for me as i’d be reading the literature regardlessly.

if you don’t live for anything you die for something…

“living for ‘nothing’ actually gives an individual a greater sense of self, and therefore empowerment and control.”

i like that thinking, but is that really possible? someone who is empowered and has a strong sense of self has not lived for nothing; they have lived to gain and experience that sense of fulfillment. thats an amazing thing to be living for.

I don’t know if its possible to live for nothing. We all have our commitments, to our family, to our friends, to our beliefs, and to our people (if you’re like me). It reminds me of a Martin Luther King Jr. quote that goes… “A man who won’t die for something is not fit to live.” Even the belief that living for nothing is better than something is a BELIEF that you’ve tailored your life and mind to, therefore you live for it, so you’re living for something, not nothing. Living for nothing is impossible, because you wouldn’t be living at all.

I agree with Verno and Existentialism is the way to go. Living for that truth you create for your life is not a conviction so much a reward.
