A black-and-white photo of a person mid-air in a Superman-style body suspension pose, supported by multiple hooks in their back and legs, smiling joyfully toward the camera. They are suspended horizontally in a large indoor space with high ceilings and visible rigging. A group of onlookers—some seated, some standing—watch with expressions of admiration, amusement, and support. The atmosphere is lively and communal, capturing a moment of shared experience and transformation.

When scarification goes bad

Update: First, the person in this procedure healed fine and is very happy. Second, I want to make it clear that while this procedure looks very intense, it’s probably less intense as a procedure than some large skin removal work, transscrotal piercings, implants, tongue splitting, and all the other procedures generally accepted by the body modification community.

Ok, this is a pretty gory entry. I apologize for that. But I think it’s important to emphasize that when you do large scale scarification (or sometimes small scale), sometimes the keloid grows out of control and starts getting very uncomfortable, restricting mobility, and so on. This piece was only about a month old in the photos below (it was done by a “well known body modification artist” who’s gonna stay unnamed because that’s not the point of the entry) and the customer was quite unhappy and wanted it dealt with.

Samppa Von Cyborg and Lukas Zpira got together to help him as much as they could. They felt that all of it was cut too deep, and did their best to excise the tissue, although the centre keloid was not removed (I’m assuming it was adhered right to the cartilage at bottom of the sternum). Starting with some exploratory cuts:

Mostly off and looking very gory:

As you can see, quite a chasm of tissue was removed! Check out the fatty tissue below:

Once stitched up, I can’t imagine how relived and happy the customer must have been. It’s a pretty intense removal, and a lot to go through, but Lukas and Samppa did a nice job restoring him… Hopefully the removal doesn’t have similar keloiding issues (sometimes it’s a problem that snowballs).

Finally, the gross out shot of the removed tissue:

Please take scarification seriously!!!

Damn you “body modifiers” are idiots 🙂
I seriously want to see your opinion about this ”fashionable” practice in a few years, 10-15 years should suffice well. (Especially those who tampered with their penis.)
And good luck with the diseases you got from that very clean-looking project, not even wearing gloves for crying out loud.

In the U.K. it’s not illegal to perform a surgical procedure without medical qualifications on consenting adults (it is on animals though).
Can’t really see the difference between that and breast augmentation on a moral level, except I suspect most cosmetic surgeons have a greater degree of ethical laxity. But better sterile technique.
Also local analgesia can be dangerous, especially in excess, and fat tissue can bleed to an alarming degree.

In response to Shannon’s editorial, I generally agree that personal freedom should be a fundamental principle of any civilized society. I also recognize, however, that in a healthy society it is sometimes necessary to place the welfare of the community above the absolute liberty of the individual.

I believe that people have the right to radically alter their bodies if that’s what they want. I also understand that sometimes these experiments can go badly, and it will be necessary for the person to go to a hospital or medical professional. It’s a little bit like seatbelt and motorcycle helmet laws — I think people have the right to put themselves at risk, but a reasonable case can be made that by doing so, they are putting others at risk. There are only so many doctors to go around, and every surgeon who has to fix a motorcycle head injury or botched amputation, that’s one less surgeon who is available to help somebody whose injury was less preventable.

wow that is one of the worse keliods I have ever seen. Some people will scar pretty bad when having flesh removal or even simple scarification however those were huge. I can only imagine the pain from the stress those scars pulling would cause. If I ever thought of getting anything like that done I would goto my friend Ryan Ouellette at Precision Body Arts and be sure to talk it all over first but seeing I am not really into the scar look that won’t happen but fuck man that shit is messed up.

I do think the revision might have been better off being done by a plastic surgeon in a sterile operating theater instead of a scarification studio due to major infection possibilities but they at least got the tissue out but what damage was added to the already traumatized areas.

This is my opinion only and I am not trying to say what I think has any more merit then any other persons just my 2 cents I would hope people will research whatever they plan on doing to their bodies iin great detail before doing something like that.
