A black-and-white photo of a person mid-air in a Superman-style body suspension pose, supported by multiple hooks in their back and legs, smiling joyfully toward the camera. They are suspended horizontally in a large indoor space with high ceilings and visible rigging. A group of onlookers—some seated, some standing—watch with expressions of admiration, amusement, and support. The atmosphere is lively and communal, capturing a moment of shared experience and transformation.

Bruce Potts ROCKS!

Best school teacher ever? I don’t know, because I never took a class under him. But coolest ex-teacher ever? Definitely. And thus he gets to stay at the top of ModBlog until I get back from Carlilse and NYC! Anyway, go say hello to Bruce over at IAM:tribalface and meet one of the most remarkable men in this community with one of the wildest look (that he had to wait until he retired to get).

Oh my gosh, that is so ridiculously awesome! So well done, I’m blown away. That is so amazing. That is a crazy cool piece indeed. *speechless*

I particularly like the forehead and eyes in particular – but all of it is so well done, sheesh.

The thing I find wierdest about this guy is the lack of eyebrows…

Wow. I met him a couple of years ago. He was very nice in person. I see he’s added more color since then.

I think the coolest part is people that will label him a freak or whatever and jump to conclusions about him would never guess he was a teacher. Just goes to show how diverse the modified community is becoming.

    He looks friendly.

I wonder how he keeps his eyebrows away- permanent lazer hair removal perhaps?
I can’t imagine plucking/waxing all the hairs out so often.

I think it’s lovely that he seems so happy now.

DAMN the education system to make him wait till AFTER retirement!

the color work on the eyelids is particularly stunning.

Alkaline_fairy, ref the eyebrows – maybe nair for men?

you know, i think one of the coolest things about modblog is that we get to see samples of such a wide variety of work done by different artists, with who the artist is, and where they work almost always annotated… it’s a great tool for finding an artist whose style/skill you like that you may have never otherwise known about. so, thanks to everyone who sends in pics and stories about your piercings, tats, etc..

shannon, i may not always agree with you, but in appreciation of all the good that you *do* do, i think i’m going to buy you a book from your wishlist.

semi off-topic, but does anyone know how to get in touch with IAM:katzen? the email address on her iam page has been bouncing back for a while now, and i’m hoping to get some ink done by her 🙂

His eyebrows probably never grew back after being shaved. If you shave your eyebrows you always have a chance of them not growing back. The chance grows as you grow older.

Posted on 05-21-2006 06:02:03 by Courtney
Tracy – that’s incorrect. If you shave your eyebrows they will always grow back. By shaving you leave the root of the hair intact, therefore much like a plant, it’ll grow back.

The only way he could’ve gotten his eyebrows to stop growing back is either by laser/electrolysis or frequent waxing. Eventually they stop growing when the root is removed fairly often.
I don’t mean to offend you or correct you in a demeaning way, please don’t take it that way. Just explaining how it works.

Posted on 05-22-2006 22:20:47 by Em
Courtney – not correct. After shaving them for a long enough period of time they may stop growing back. I shaved my eyebrows completely off for 5 years and now have significant thinning in certain areas of my eyebrows when I try to encourage natural growth and still need to draw them in ;). Of course it wasn’t an instantaneous way to lose my eyebrows (sadly), but you can still spot little old ladies wandering around redrawing their eyebrows in from shaving/plucking them so severely for so many years. The only way to guarantee the hair never comes back, you’re right, is electrolysis.

But shaving your eyebrows is no big deal to do. I assume guys would do it with their daily shaving, yeah? Myself, I probably shaved them every 2-3 days to draw back on.

Whoa! He reminds me of Mr. Christianson, my highschool english teacher! He was covered in Star Wars and mythology tattoos and would talk to you about everything, from comic books, to politics and social economics.

It’s really great to see people in an influencial position with body modifications. Because of Christianson, I’m following my dreams and I’m currently a tattoo apprentice.

This man honestly completely freaks me out. I’ve seen plenty of tattoos and piercings, but what is freaky is that if he ever needs to leave his community of friends who get where he’s coming from, he will be treated like an alien from another planet. Not a choice I’d make, but of course it’s his right, and orange and blue ARE complimentary colors, so I have to agree the color combination is nice. However, I hope someone is working on creating a removable iSkin for a human face (like that for the iPod).

I get slightly annoyed but the “what are you going to do when you’re (insert any age here)”. The man is a professor who seems to be quite successful in his life. So, I imagine that when he is 70, Jen, he will still be smiling and loving his life. Calling what Bruce has accomplished “stupidity” is nothing but plain and simple ignorance. Grow up indeed.

He says something like presentation is all about attitude and nuance, not one’s appearance. Yet, look at the massive amount of attention he’s paid to his appearance.

Sure, he’s a success in academia, hooray. But, you can’t deny there was a pivotal moment in his life when he realized he wasn’t standing out from the crowd soley on attitude and nuance — he had to go the glam route for… for… for whatever demon of insecurity haunts his esteem.

He’s akin to the county sheriff who always wears aviator sunglasses: neither wants to be laid bare, so both hide their unique nuances behind a manufactured attitude.

Those of you contemplating horn implants, lip rings, breast augmentation, etc. to enhance “self-esteem” or whatever your reasons, most of the world, like 99.999%, will be so distracted by your modifications the real you will be lost upon them.

Want to stand out from the crowd? Learn to geuninely like and accept yourself — all of yourself and your baggage, too. How do you do that? I have no idea, but that’s where you’re going to find the real mojo that makes YOU tick. Call it your spirit, Grace or enlightenment, but that single challenge is universal, timeless and offers a life of riches.

Joining the sideshow dwellers is to castigate yourself into the shadows, letting those who live life miss out on your presence.

I think its important that he’s teaching tolerance, we need more teachers doing that, regardless of if they have fabulous tattoos or not.

Does anyone know if the designs are authentic Maori (I believe thats what I read in some article or post), or if they are some other ethnic design where they originate from, or perhaps they are simply a combination of culture and his own ideas?

I also wonder how long a tattoo of that caliber takes?

Much respect to Bruce Potts. ~paperflowers
