A black-and-white photo of a person mid-air in a Superman-style body suspension pose, supported by multiple hooks in their back and legs, smiling joyfully toward the camera. They are suspended horizontally in a large indoor space with high ceilings and visible rigging. A group of onlookers—some seated, some standing—watch with expressions of admiration, amusement, and support. The atmosphere is lively and communal, capturing a moment of shared experience and transformation.

Theres nothing new under the sun. There are no new ideas, just new implementations. Scarification is a perfect example. Humans have been scarring themselves since the beginning of time. The cycle of things has in recent years brought scarification out of the closet and into the consciousness of the modification community. Practitioners have been working to perfect their craft and modification collectors have been planning what scar to make theirs.

Why not do it together?

Scarwars1 wasnt what you typically think of as a convention. The event, hosted by Shawn Porter and staffed by a team of amazing volunteers, was an event unlike any other ever attempted. Over the weekend of May 19-21 a group of people connected by their desire to share in an art form yet to be perfected gathered in a little warehouse in Philadelphia to perform and partake in the act of scarification.

The results were amazing. What came out of the year of planning was a blending of artists and personalities and art and form that will live forever. Some of the most amazing scarification pieces ever performed were performed in our midst. Industry famous photographers Phil Barbosa and Allen Falkner lent their skill and eye to documenting the event. The results were some of the most amazing images ever captured. In addition to reveling in the art of scarification, we reveled in the company of each other. While the days were dedicated to hardcore art creation, the evenings were full of camaraderie.

So why let the east coast have all the fun?
