A black-and-white photo of a person mid-air in a Superman-style body suspension pose, supported by multiple hooks in their back and legs, smiling joyfully toward the camera. They are suspended horizontally in a large indoor space with high ceilings and visible rigging. A group of onlookers—some seated, some standing—watch with expressions of admiration, amusement, and support. The atmosphere is lively and communal, capturing a moment of shared experience and transformation.

Is that you Han?

I really debated on posting this tattoo. I thought the customizations on it were pretty funny but Han Solo’s features are a bit off. There is something too “ethnic” about his nose and lips to be an accurate portrait of Hans Solo/Harrison Ford. What I’m not sure of though if that’s on purpose because of the bling bling chain. So it’s either a “hilarious” take on a sci-fi tattoo portrait, or.. not.

Wow, at least its not as bad as this one by Tivis Philips of Ancient Art in Blacksburg Virginia. Seriously, I saw this poor guys tattoo once tivis did it and I felt so bad for him. You wouldn’t know what he’s holding if it wasn’t a famous shot of han. Princess Leia is next to him, and it’s so bad and unrecognizable he didn’t post any pictures of it and altered the photo of the Han Solo tattoo so you couldn’t see her.

Do you think Zach Braff looks too “ethnic”? Because that dude looks like Zach Braff.

  21. Rachel Avatar

I don’t know if it’s Hans or Han. Google didn’t really help to clarify the issue at all.

And yes, I said “ethnic”. He doesn’t have Caucasian features, which you’d expect because Harrison Ford is a white guy.

@ Dandy, i think it could possibly be racist to suggest that because somebody has a blinged out chain, that they are therefor an ethnic minority. in the end, white people are racist. believe that.

  27. Rachel Avatar

That’s why I put it in quotes because I was 99% sure someone would be like “OMG saying certain features are ethnic is racist” when it’s not.

I think it’s primarily because saying ‘ethnic’ in that manner implies that caucasian is the norm. You can have a caucasian ethnicity as well! It’s not racist as such to state that certain features can be prevalent in certain groups of people, but to equate ‘ethnicity’ with ‘non-white’ is very other-ing. This isn’t a gripe at you as much as it is a gripe at collective conceptions in ‘western’ societies.
    Also, Rachel, I hope you don’t listen to all of the horrible things people have been directing at you recently. It seems like the internet is an easy ‘anon’ behind which people can be complete assholes. I think you are doing a great job :}

  30. Jessamine Avatar

I think people are offended because it insinuates there are white people and then *everyone else* who can be lumped in under one word. It’s hard because perhaps that is just a common word and the easiest to use in terms of everyone understanding what is said. However, as a mostly caucasian person (I have a tiny bit of Aboriginal way back in my family tree) I find it a little off too as we all have an ethnicity and therefore should all be ethnic by definition. BUT we don’t use that word in Australia so I may respond differently if I was American… on the topic of the tattoo though the features are WAY off, I wonder if it was intended?

  31. Rachel Avatar

It doesn’t imply that being white or Caucasian is the norm. There are certain characteristics, like wider noses, darker skin, larger lips etc that are defined as ethnic. They are not genetically associated with a white face like you’d expect to see in Harrison Ford.

  32. lornen Avatar

Everyone is looking into this too much.. It’s not a picture of Hitler pissing on a jewish grave or anything horrible like that. It’s just a silly bling solo tattoo, ment to make you giggle during these chilly dark days.

  34. Simon Avatar

i agree with sabine. that totally looks like zach braff

  35. Jen Avatar

Rachel, you are dumb, it’s Han. You don’t need Google, just IMDB. I’m pretty sure the name is spelled the way it’s meant to be in the credits of the movie. I hate Star Wars by the way.

“It doesn’t imply that being white or Caucasian is the norm. There are certain characteristics, like wider noses, darker skin, larger lips etc that are defined as ethnic. They are not genetically associated with a white face like you’d expect to see in Harrison Ford.”

Right. But if you use “ethnic” interchangeably with non-white, then you’re saying that white is _not_ ethnic, and therefore normative.

Not saying this to be offensive—and certainly not calling you racist. It’s just something to keep in mind.

  37. oppositronic Avatar
    oppositronic

the racist part is where you suggest that because of the bling, the distortions to hans’ face may be a deliberate attempt to make him look ethnic.

“What I’m not sure of though if that’s on purpose because of the bling bling chain.”

this sentence is also grammatically incorrect.

additionally, being white is an inherently racist act.
