When I had finally got the courage to "take the plunge", all I knew was that I wanted a tattoo, and I wanted it to be original, not something that I would see a hundred times a day, on people who followed with the fashion trends and decided to get something with no real meaning. I thought about what I really loved, my boyfriend, and my family, I have also had a small obsession with various mythological creatures. After looking over all of the ink web-sites known to man, and reading up other people's experience's, I decided that my tattoo was going to be of a fairy, a rose and a butterfly, on my lower back. I no, I no, it doesn't sound very original at all at first, however, my tattoo was going to be a custom design, one which only I would ever have, and something which means so much to me ( the butterfly and the rose were my mother and sister, and the whole piece was me when I was with my boyfriend). The whole scene reflected all of the things in my life which I treasure, a nd as I had an awful 2002, it was even more important for me to put onto my skin the things I love in my life.

Now, although I had my idea, it came to my attention that I couldn't get a tattoo without an artist, and believe me, if I wanted mediocre work, there are plenty of places in Liverpool who would have done my work for me. However, as this was to be my first tattoo, a custom AND had to be on my skin forever, I only wanted the best artist. I finally made the decision to go to Fallen Angel after I looked at my piercer's web-site and discovered that they were merging with a tattoo parlor, at a new location. As my piercer is the best in Liverpool, (I would advise anyone to go to Body Decor, Liverpool), I knew that this parlor must be good. Another bonus for me was that Phil (my artist) loved doing custom work.

As I cant draw to save my life, I wrote down what I wanted and gave it to my artist. However, to my dismay , I was informed that what I wanted was to intricate to be put onto the skin without it turning into a giant blob in 5years time or less!! But, what Phil came up with was amazing, and I wasn't going to be stupid and argue with an expert who has had many years of experience. After Phil had showed me the drawing, I made the appointment for three weeks later (I was going on holiday, and had to wait an awful couple of weeks!!)

Finally, after my long wait, my day came. I was so nervous, and the tattoo parlor was about 30mins away from my house. My mum came with me for moral support. I was sent upstairs to wait for Phil to finish 'our' work of art, this wait was probably the worst. Sitting there, waiting for the process to begin. Thankfully, I was only waiting about five minutes, Phil had finished making his needles, and getting the ink ready. Phil shaved my back, and stuck my transfer on, I stood up and looked at my future tattoo to see if it was were I wanted it. It was perfect. He only did a small line to begin with, and I wont lie, it hurt. But it was a good pain, and I knew that at the end of it all, I would have a work of art on my back. The pain was worst when he did long lines, but that only lasted a small while, and when I say pain, it was more like a hot scratching sensation . After the horror stories I was told about tattoo's on the spine, I was expecting an awful pain. It was bad, but no t that bad, and the pain was worse when he was working on the left hand side of my spine (as my tattoo goes across my lower back) rather than when he was on my spine.

The whole process took about two hours, from start to finnish, and I was sorry when it was over!! The months, even the years of preparation for this one moment, the visiting of the tattoo parlor, was all over in two hours. It is true when people say that bod mods are addictive, and I know that whoever reads this will have read this same statement over one hundred times before, but it is true!! My first experience was over in two hours, but, my next tattoos have got the rest of my life to grow.

The main reason for me writing this article was to let people know that having a custom tattoo is probably the best idea that I have ever had. I love the fact that this custom design was a creation of my own, along with the interpretation of a brilliant artist, and this is reiterated when people comment on how they have never seen a tattoo like mine before. It pays to be original and what makes it even more special for me is that my first ever tattoo, what I waited so long for, was not something that every girl and her friends will have. I am currently planning my next venture into the world of tattoo's and I believe that the main reason why I want another tattoo is because my first tattoo went so well. Don't allow trends effect your first experience, as it is something that should be treasured forever.
