The Suspending Chef

The Suspending Chef. January 9th, 2006 I moved to Pittsburgh, PA from a small town in upstate New York. I missed my friends, I missed my family, but I really didn't miss the town at all. I spent about two months or so through the first cycle of classes (cycle is 39 class days), and all I wanted to do was come home. I talked to the suspension crew a couple of weeks before. I decided I wanted to suspend when I visited home, however, I needed a new set of hooks and I was broke, and it hit me. ... read more

Woman hung like a man!

The first time I heard about suspensions was around 1996. It doesn't sound like that long ago to some, but I was only 14 at the time. I had social issues back then, and found myself delving into world religions as a teenager. I found it fascinating that there were such extreme differences in cultures from here to there, and I realized that my own culture lacked certain "rites of passage" that had obvious consequences on the populous growing up. World religions led me to information from all over (i.e. books, the internet, personal experiences). I kept up the interest ... read more

A Suicide to Remember

On what seemed to be a normal day four years ago, on October 22, 2002. I went to school and saw my friend Jimi. I was glowing that day because the day before I broke up with my boyfriend. Jimi said he had news that could top mine. His best friend Matt had killed himself; he hung himself. I was floored and shocked. Not because I knew him. I won't lie and pretend I did. I knew him only by association. I was just so shocked that someone besides me could want to die that much. He was only 15. ... read more

Anti-Gravity

Background: I'd always had a curiosity about suspension, but my curiosity grew into a desire after my Intro to Religion course. My presentation group was able to find a wonderful guest speaker from the Lakota tribe to come in and talk about the Lakota beliefs, and he also spent about 15 minutes talking about the Sun Dance and his personal experience. If you're not familiar with this ritual, I suggest reading up on it. Part of the ceremony may include a chest energy pull ending in ripping lose from the hook/rope. Themes of rebirth had been running through my head ... read more

Koi Kolor

Back on January 13th - a Friday - I got the line work done on my racing Koi fish. I set forth an ambitious plan to have tattoo work done every two weeks. So on the 27th of January, I had color added to the Koi. For me, it's ambitious because I never quite know how well the tattoos will heal. Two weeks may seem like a long time but when a tattoo is going slowly through the healing process, it can throw off the entire plan. As stated above - I'm not the best healer, so it takes a ... read more

Six Hooks

Suspension was something that I had been interested in for quite a while but I figured that no one in Australia hosted or performed suspension events (although I never really went out of my way to look for someone to hook me up). But through a friend I was put in contact with the great people at The Hanged Man Team. I went along as a spectator to see how exactly they worked their event & after a lengthy chat with some of the people in the group I really wanted to go up. At this point I did have ... read more

From pain to pleasure, or a story of a pull.

I LET THE PAIN PASS THROUGH ME AND I SMILE It's been a long, very emotional weekend. Starting with a mid-day train ride to the wrong place and finishing with one last train ride, this time to the right destination. Between these two crucial train rides lies a whirlpool of experiences, pain, and emotions. The pain throughout this weekend was immense, sometimes too much to bear. Excruciating, breaking, forging pain that passes through the body and the spirit, wrecking all in it's path. After the pain there is nothing, nothing but a place to build over. It has been indeed ... read more

Set into a coma

So this weekend was much different then the normal weekend of drinking at the house. My friend Bryon and I drove south of the cities to a farm for a suspension show that I have been anticipating for weeks. We left Saturday morning and arrived around 1:30. Setting up our tent was all hell, but it gave us something to do while we waited for the artists to prepare the barn. The first suspension was a superman by a guy named Ben. I was nervous at first but when I saw him hanging in the air and loving every minute ... read more

My virgin suicide

A quiet rural road. Farmers going about their business, a middle aged couple with their two small children pass on a single lane road; an outing to the local mall or a trip to an exciting tourist attraction. Into a small estate. Rural suburbia. Twentieth century housing and cul-de-sac's. A small primary school, possibly a first school, dormant at the centre of the community, awaiting the hubbub of Monday morning. Children playing on bikes, parents mowing the lawns and washing their cars. The perfect weekend. Great weather, warm and sunny. The darkness within hidden by some fencing and a patchy ... read more
