Before getting my third piercing, my nape, I had been quite relatively 'safe' with my piercings, meaning that I chose them as they were considered by myself as virtually pain-free. However, after growing up since I had my first two piercings done (6mm Ear and Navel) I decided that I wanted something more 'exotic'.

One day, she was walking down the stairs in front of me with her hair up and I saw these two little balls attatched to a bar going through her neck. I really liked the piercing that she had and this is one of the reasons why I chose a nape piercing as my next venture. A fellow student at university also had a double nape piercing which I thought looked really good and she helped me to conquer my fear of pain (although I have quite a high pain threshold) and get it done.
Before the decision to get my nape piercing was written in stone, I did a lot of research on the internet and through reading other people's experiences on this website. I think that getting the right amount of information about the piercing either through the piercer or anyother portal is critical as you need to be aware of the risks involved and other things such as the rate of rejection and migration, which is very common in these types of piercing. Anyway, I decided that I had read enough and decided to go ahead and get the piercing.
I decided that I would get it done one Saturday morning, so picked up my friend and drove to the tattoo and piercing studio. I had never been to this particular studio, so was unaware of what to expect, although all my friends had given it very high ratings. We were told that the peiercer (I cannot remember her name) could do it for me then and it would cost £30, which I thought was quite reasonable. Anyway we went upstairs and waited listening to the whirring sound of tattoos being done right in front of us. I was so, so nervous as I work myself up before any type of pain, even if I know it won't hurt that much. Anyway, after about 5 mins the piercer called me in and I sat on a chair in the studio. The woman who was carrying out the procedure was really nice and explained everything to me clearly so I knew what to expect. Firstly she measured me up and dotted where the entrance and exit holes will be situated. All was fine. Then, she fitted the clamp which was quite uncomfor table but wasn't too bad. After this it was time for the actual piercing. She told me to take a deep breath in and out as she started putting pressure on the needle. I could feel it go all the way through my nape, but it wasn't really painful. To tell you the truth, it was more like a sharp sting and nothing else.
The next stage was to fit the PTFE. This was probably the most painful part of the piercing, but it was over in a matter of seconds, so really wasn't too bad. I looked in the mirror once she had screwed in the ball and I was really happy with it, it looks absolutely amazing. She told me how to clean it with a saline solution and off I went.
It is now 5 weeks on and it is healing really well. The first few nights sleep made the piercing bleed due to the fact that I was obviously unintentionally lying on it throughout the night. The pain was quite high which made the piercing quite uncomfortable for the first few days. However, once that was over with I had no problems with it at all, and I sometimes even forget its there! I managed to get some ready mixed saline solution from a pharmacy which I used to clean it. It's quite difficult to clean due to the location, so I got my housemate to help me each day. I was told by the piercer to come back in a month to get a shorter bar fitted, but when I went back I was advised not to get it changed quite yet as the piercing is healing extraodinarily well so has not moved.
I would highly recommend anyone thinking about getting this piercing done as it really is an eye-catching piercing, which has got quite a few converstations rolling. I am now looking forward to my next piercing adventure, which will either be my helix or tragus :-) The piercer also noted that I had extremely supple skin which would be perfect for tattooing so I am considering that at the moment too!
