When I was sixteen (now eighteen) I went with my friend to get her lower bellybutton pierced at a sort-of sketchy tattoo/piercing shop. The piercer asked my friend why she wasn't going to get her nipples pierced, and she told him it was because she wasn't of age. He told her he didn't care that she wasn't eighteen, so she ended up getting them pierced. She barely even flinched as the needle went through the first time, and the second time she held eye contact with me the entire time, not looking pained at all. She told me it was pretty much painless. I started to think about getting mine done, so I started asking around to people, seeing how much they thought that it hurt, how well they healed, et cetera. Another friend of mine had recently gotten hers done and said it didn't hurt at all. She also showed me them, and I thought they looked really cute- so I decided I would get mine done as well.

I didn't think about it too much through out the week (I was waiting for my paycheck to get them done) because I knew I'd probably back out if I thought about it too much. A week later I came into the shop and asked if they would pierce my nipples. There was a different piercer in that day, so I didn't know if he would pierce me, or not. The piercer asked what my age was. When I told him I was sixteen, he told me he'd have to think about it for a minute. I was secretly hoping he would say no, because I get really scared before I get pierced. A couple of minutes later I asked if he had decided yet, and he told me that he would do it. I tried not to be too concerned with how much it was going to hurt. I started freaking out as he put the clamps on my nipples. He started with my right nipple, saying it usually hurts the most. So the needle went through, and I began shouting profanity I normally wouldn't use in public. After the ring was in, I thought "oh well, the second one won't hurt as bad". I was soo wrong. The second nearly doubled in pain. I sat there and looked at my newly pierced nipples, thinking "hopefully this will be worth the pain I just went through". He taped two paper towels (nice bandage, huh?) to my boobs and off I went into the sunset.

My right nipple healed pretty well, but I noticed that the left side of the hole of my left nipple piercing kept on moving farther down my nipple. I didn't want to take it out because my right one healed just fine and I didn't want to only have one nipple piercing, so I just let it be. At first it hurt pretty badly whenever my nipples were hard, but I thought it looked hilarious if I wasn't wearing a bra (because it looked like I was nipping out in four places). It hurt to wear certain bras, so I went without a lot of the time hoping they would heal and the left one would stop migrating. Eventually it stopped migrating, but it still looked goofy, so I took it out. I felt off balance, so a few months later I took my right ring out.

I think that what went wrong was that I was pierced by an inexperienced artist. I knew that if I had gone somewhere else, they probably wouldn't pierce me because a more experienced artist would probably have higher morals than to pierce a 16 year old girl (and not even check ID to see that I was even 16) so I settled for a stingy shop that had pierced my bellybutton when I was fourteen, and told me not to tell my parents about it.

It's been over a year since I took both of my nipple rings out. My left nipple didn't scar at all, but for whatever reason my right nipple did. I don't regret getting my nipples pierced, but I probably wouldn't have the balls to go through with it again. It was entirely too painful for me to go through (but I'm also a huge wuss). I've also had my ears, nose, tongue webbing, tongue (regular), belly button, and lower bellybutton pierced- and I have to say that getting my nipples pierced was the worst, second to getting my tongue webbing done.

I would still recommend getting your nipples pierced, but to wait until you are 18 and can get pierced by someone who really knows what they're doing. Also, having them pierced didn't increase sensitivity as I thought it would (so don't be too bummed out if that's what you're looking for). If you do get them pierced, make sure they're fully healed before you involve them in foreplay, or any of that. Because I heard that is what most commonly causes them to migrate.
