I've always wanted piercings right from when I was really young. I have 3 normal piercings in my ears and one at the top. I also have my Monroe now which was done more recently.

Back to the actual piercing, my mum made me wait until I was 13 til I could get my navel pierced, although she still thought I was too young but I managed to persuade her.

It was 7th April and another girl in my year was going to get hers done later in the day. I was going to be the first in my year at school which I was very excited about.

My mum isn't too good with piercings, even though she also has her belly button done, so she came but got her friend to take me properly. Another girl who was 16 at the time wanted her's done too but her mum wouldn't allow it so she came to watch me get mine done instead.

Before I had even reached Hair and Body additions I was really nervous and having second thoughts. All that was going through my mind was; what if it goes wrong? What if i really don't like it? Will it really hurt? It didn't help that my mum was saying "You don't have to do anything you don't want to Ashleigh, you do know that don't you?" It would of been nicer if she was just quiet! I would of been a lot more relaxed but I knew I wasn't going to get that.

When we got into Hair and Body additions we filled in the necessary forms and made sure I definitely wanted it done. I then went upstairs and left mum and the other girl down there.

A lady who was going to pierce me let me choose my banana bell which was double jewelled and turquoise. She then marked me and I checked that the placement was ok. I made sure that I would have a big enough gap because I know that it shrinks a lot after a while. (I was glad I said something because lots of my friends are unhappy because their gap is so small).

I then lied on a bed while she explained what she was going to do. I begged her to let my mum's friend come behind the curtain with me because I was so nervous, she had to stand near my feet though because the piercer needed to be by my side, it was better than nothing! The piercer could tell how scared I was because she made me lie on my hands encase I tried to stop her when she was piercing me She then sprayed some numbing lotion on the area and told me the clamps may hurt but they honestly didn't. Next I was told to breathe in then out slowly and on 3 she pushed the needle through, I felt her to begin with but it was completely pain free. She then put the bar in and a plaster over it and I was done.

I was still quite shaky so she sat me up and gave me a glass of water and said I could sit there till I felt ready to go back down in case I fell down the stairs which would be my luck!

I was told to keep the plaster on for 12hours and to not change my bar for 3months. After I had paid £32 I went. Getting in my mum's friend's car was quite tricky because I had to climb in the back.

Once home I was too excited to keep the bandage on and mum said I could let the air get to it. I was so happy I couldn't stop looking and talking about it for ages. I bathed it with some solution I had been given twice a day for a few months and also used sea salt soaks on it every night until it completely heeled. Thankfully it only went red for about a week.

I am still happy with it and recommend it to anyone just make sure you have a good think first in case you regret it and will have a lovely scar! Not that I'm trying to put any one off but my friend from another school has a friend who had hers done and she was really disappointed with the outcome because hers was really infected and pussy. She always complained about it being itchy and as she scratched it, it got worse and then it was sore as well. This obviously doesn't always happen but it does sometimes and it looks really awful if it does. A lot of my friends have had theirs done and they look really nice.

The bit I like most about having my navel pierced is colour co-ordinating my jewels with my tops when I go out. If I'm going out at night time and am wearing a short top I like to have my jewel matching it.

Navel bars can be expensive but there are places you can buy them for a good price like stalls in the butter market or Tower ramparts but you can buy expensive ones from jewellers or places like Just Essentials. When you have a few nice bars you don't really need to get anymore but if you have a friend or a relative who is stuck for a present for Christmas or your birthday it's a great little present.

Have fun!!
