I have always been interested in body modifications, be it a piercing, tattoos or something as little as colored hair. Having my ears pierced for the first time at the age of 4, I knew that in the future there would be plenty more to come. When I was thirteen, I decided it was a must to get my bellybutton done just like every other little girl in my school. I begged and begged and begged my mom for hours on end, until finally we agreed that for my fourteenth birthday I could go through with my plans. Being satisfied with our decision, I decided to let it go until my birthday when I would bring up the piercing again.

Three years passed and I was now sixteen. By this time I had gotten my ears pierced eight more times, including my anti-trag and conch. Also I had my nostril pierced once on both sides. It seemed as if the navel had slipped my mind. Having a new boyfriend who was obsessed with navel piercings, I was once again reminded about my old desire for a navel ring. Now, time had passed, and I wasn't too keen on getting my belly button pierced at all. But with A LOT of convincing and puppy eyes from my boyfriend I decided to get it done.
I already knew where I would get it done. At a little shop in my town where I had gotten all of my other piercings. I woke up in the morning, pretty nervous but stoked, called one of my girlfriends and we bussed downtown. I had my own jewelry which I had borrowed from a close friend. When I walked into the parlor I noticed that my usual piercer was not there, only his apprentice. I was worried that I might not be able to get it done. I walked up to the counter and asked if she could do my bellybutton. She informed me that it was one of the things she was allowed to do without supervision. So I showed her my ID (you only have to be sixteen), filled out some forms and gave them my jewelry. I was then informed that I would have to come back in about an hour because the jewelry had to be sterilized. This was pretty disappointing, because I was starting to get really nervous and just wanted to get the whole deal over with.
It was a rainy day outside, and I really had no desire to go and look through the shops. So we walked across the road to a Wendy's and decided to get some burgers then go back. I don't know if this was a good or bad idea. I'm not sure if you're supposed to eat or not right before getting a piercing, but I don't believe the food did anything to me. Eating didn't take long, so we ended up going back to the parlor and looking through photo albums of some of my usual piercers work, and tattoos.
Eventually, the time came for me to finally get my belly button pierced. I was led into the usual room in the back. The lady who pierced my navel was very friendly and comfortable to be around. She asked me if I was aware of the cleaning procedures, and then explained anything that might be different for cleaning navels. I was asked to lye down on a flat bed-like thing. It was defiantly not like a dentist chair, although it was pretty comfortable. I was wearing a hoodie, which kept falling onto my stomach, so the piercer asked me if I could take it off. This is when the trouble started. Underneath my hoodie I was only wearing a thin tank top. I've already stated that this day didn't have wonderful weather, so as soon as my hoodie came off I got goose bumps like mad!
She proceeded in cleaning my bellybutton and then marking the spot where she would pierce it. With my friend being silly and telling me how much it would hurt, I became even more nervous and tense. It took what seemed like forever for the clamp to be put on properly. Finally, the clamp was secure, or so I thought. Right as she went to pierce my bellybutton the clamp just popped off. I was getting pretty annoyed. The piercer informed me that it was because I was so skinny and it was difficult to get enough skin into the clamp (my goose bumps, making my skin tighter didn't help). Finally, again, the clamp was put in place and she told me to breathe in and out. On my third breath I felt the most excruciating pain I have EVER felt. She had begun to put the needle through. During the worst pain I believe I've even encountered the clamp POPPED off again! Now, having a fair amount of piercings, I've experienced having the needle take two pushes to get completely through. From her first push with the needle, it had barely broke the skin. She proceeded in continuing the piercing without the clamp in place. It ended up taking four pushes to go completely through. The whole time, I had this shooting pain going from my belly button up to my temples. Finally, when it was over, I paid and quickly got out. I was pretty pissed off, but didn't want to be rude to this lady.
On the bus back home, once the general pain had subsided, my friend and I had a good laugh about the whole thing. I must admit, that although this was thee most painful piercing I have gotten so far, I'm very happy with it. The next day, when I showed my boyfriend, he was pretty happy too. I didn't bother explaining all of the pain I had gone through for him.
It's been a couple months since I got my navel pierced, and I have changed it to a hoop with a pretty pearl blue ball. I found that, with me, the bar bell just caused irritation. I still clean it everyday with sailene solution, and its caused no trouble. Although I remember the pain from my first navel piercing, I'm thinking about getting two more on the bottom. I would defiantly recommend to anyone wanting a belly button piercing to get one. All of my friends who have them say it didn't hurt at all. And hey, the pain I felt for MAYBE an hour was totally worth a cute little ring in my belly button for years to come =D.
