I've always wanted a lip ring. I just always thought they were really hot on people. When I was 15, I asked my mom is she would take me to get it and of course her answer was no, but she did settle for a belly button ring. Well, I kept nagging her about getting my lip done, and after 2 years she finally said yes. On Christmas break of my Junior year was the time set for me to get my lip pierced.

But, deep down inside my mom thought this was a bad idea.... If only I knew what was going to happen next.
The day of my piercing I was so nervous. I was scared that it was going to hurt. My boyfriend (who has had his lip done like 8 times) told me it wouldn't hurt at all. I knew it wouldn't, but still I was freaking out. When we got to the place, I showed them my ID and they told us to sit and wait. About 5 minutes later Shawn shows up and tells me to follow him. When we got into the room it wasn't like I remembered. They redid the room and now it had this Paris theme going on. It was really weird. But it was very clean. Shawn was the same guy who did my belly button so I was excited that he was doing my lip. We talked probably for about 45minutes about my belly button, my boyfriend, and being straight edge. Finally he told me to rinse my mouth out. The stuff he gave me, made me feel really sick. It was GROSS! Then he marked my lip on the left side, he had it in the perfect spot on his first try. Then he told me what all he was going to do, and told me to breathe. As soon as I exhaled he pushed the needle through. All it felt like was popping a pimple on my lip. That's how bad it hurt. Then he had me look at it. Man, I was HOT with a lip ring. I was so happy. If only I knew.
After we left, things were pretty normal. My lip didn't bleed or swell that bad. I could talk and drink perfectly. Later that night, my lip really started to swell. It made me really uncomfortable. The ring was really big, but I knew that was in case it swelled. As the night progressed my lip just got worse. When I tried to lie down and to sleep I couldn't because it hurt my lip, it throbbed really bad. So I pretty much stayed up all night. The next morning I cleaned the outside of my lip, then used the mouthwash as best as I could. I could hardly open my mouth; it felt like I had a huge tear in my lip. Well, as the day went on the swelling went down. I still couldn't drink or eat anything though. I thought this was just normal.
About 24hours after I got my piercing done, was when things started going downhill. My lip was HUGE! It was almost 3times the normal size. I thought this was odd because my boyfriend's lip didn't swell that big at all. About an hour later I had trouble breathing. I told my mom this and she could see that my left side of my neck was swollen too. She thought this was a bad sign (she's a nurse) and told me to take the lip ring out. Well, I told her no and she said I had to. I told her then I couldn't because my lip was starting to swell over the ball on the ring and I couldn't grab it that well. My mom then told me we had to try. So we went and got some oral gel to numb the pain a little. After trying to get it out for about an hour, we had to go to the ER. At the ER, the doctor was really rude to me. He asked me why would I do this to my face. I said a few choice words to him and told him to get it out, I didn't know I would have this type of reaction. About 20minutes later, and a few shots later, my lip was bigger then ever and the ring was still in there. That's the bad part; the good part was I couldn't feel a thing. Finally we thought hey let's go back to Tommy's.
When we got to Tommy's they were about to close. I ran up to the door and asked as best as I could if they could take the ring out for me. The guy there was freaked by the size of my lip. He said he has never seen anyone react like this. Another 20minutes later the ring was out. The guy said I probably had a collagen problem. I asked if he thought if I could ever get my lip done again and he said to be safe no. He told me if I would have waited another day I probably would have had to get the ring surgically removed.
When I got home my swelling immediately started to go down. I was able to eat and sleep that night. By the next morning you couldn't even tell there was a problem. You could still see the hole but my lip was its normal size.
Since my lip piercing, my mom has sworn off taking me to get anything done, even my ears. So I have to wait till I'm 18. She thinks it's her fault this happened. I kept telling her it wasn't. I miss my lip ring a lot. My boyfriend took his out since I couldn't have my done, but my best friend got hers done. That made me mad. I still to this day wish I had my lip done. Who knows maybe in the future I'll be dumb enough to take a risk and try the other side. Who could honestly tell if you are going to have that type of reaction? My advice to anyone wanting to get this done is to go ahead and do it. It's not painful at all. Just keep an eye on it and if it's doing something odd then call the people who did it. But it was a great piercing even though I had it done for a day. I have tons of pictures though with it. But you can't tell because my lip over took the ring. Just be careful if you are to get this done. It really was awesome.
