This is my experience and any opinions expressed are solely mining the author. Anyone thinking about a piercing should contact a professional because I am just I.

Piercing have always fascinated me I remember being little girl and seeing cousins with their ears pierced all the way up and thinking that it was the most wonderful thing in the world. As I grew older so did the amount of piercing that I gradually obtained, each one a small step toward recreating my individuality as an adult. In my opinion there is nothing more beautiful and feminine looking then a labret piercing on a woman.

For the longest time I really wanted my labret pierced but it wasn't allowed at my home until I officially turned into an adult, in my world and the Canadian governments that is eighteen; in my mothers it's never, but we agreed I should be able to make my own decisions in regards to my body when I turned nineteen. I finally decided that I was going to get my labret pierced I called my best friend Katie and explained that yes I finally gathered the nerve I needed to get it done and that she was my designated hand holder for the excursion. She picked me up from my house and we headed out for coffee. (Nerve only goes so far, I needed to prepare and there's nothing like a having a coffee while smoking in a glass bubble) anyway after the bubble we headed to a local parlor that has a good reputation with it's clientele.

Once inside the studio it was fairly clear that I wasn't the only person with the idea of getting pierced on a Friday evening. Twenty minutes of trying not to stare at the older woman next to me (who was turning a horrible shade of white after being told that they didn't pierce with guns and that instead of a blunt piece of metal they were going to use a clean surgical needle.) wasn't all that lovely but it's the way it goes. When I finally got in to the room I watched as the piercer set up and took all of the instruments that he was going to use out of their little blue packages. I sat down in the dentist's chair and listened while my piercer explained exactly how he was going to do the piercing. He asked me about the placement and I told him that I wanted it a little lower then the bottom line of my lip and after quite a bit of discussion we decided on a location that is about two and a half millimeters from the very bottom of my lip.

After Katie removed all her rings on her left hand so that I wouldn't bend them in a tight pre-piercing grip, I grabbed her hand. He placed the clamp on my lower lip, told me to take deep breathes in through my nose and out through my mouth and as I did so he put the needle through. Well, It definitely didn't tickle but it was totally worth a loud ouch. It's kinda funny but the piercer must have noticed my other piercing because he completely omitted any aftercare instructions. When I finally figured out that he wasn't going to provide them I asked. Well I should say my main concern was whether or not I was going to be able to drink beer that night or not. (Please remember this was Friday night) Anyway he told me it shouldn't be a problem as long as I rinsed with antiseptic mouth wash every twenty minutes or so because I would be smoking. I paid him and went on my merry little way downtown.

Just an after thought for anyone thinking of getting this piercing, after you get it done if you plan on drinking stick to the hard stuff because my lip got fairly irritated after that night and it took a long time to clear up and heal completely. Sea salt rinses work nice but alternate your cleaning methods because the sea salt can be harsh on the soft tissues in your mouth, or at least it was on mine. Also if you plan on wearing a spike in it wear it with caution because if your not paying attention and your playing with the barbell you can really hurt you top lip. (Trust me; don't ask just trust me.) But overall I love my labret, and honestly I really think I will always have it because it really adds a little character to my face. I recommend this piercing to anyone who asks about it, yes it hurt but it was completely worth it and any one I know who has ever taken it out and let it grow over wishes they hadn't. As for advice on taking care of it keep your mouth clean an d also my experience is that your body will heal itself naturally you just need to help it along and a good way to do that is to take care your mouth with just simple proper hygiene and don't play with it too much it irritates the hell out of it,
