I have a few peircings, (my tongue, eyebrow, ears) but nothing hurt as bad as my lip ring. I heard from some people that it didn't hurt, and from others that it did, or that it only hurt a little, but I didn't know what to think. So I went in the shop not really knowing what to expect.

We sat in the shop waiting for the peircist to get there for about a halfan hour. I was already nervous about whether it would hurt or not and it was just my luck that an apprentice would be doing my peircing instead of the usual peircist that I was used to and "trusted". I decided I couldn't back out after getting the money and going all the way there so I went through the procedure anyway.

I sat down in the chair and got ready to get yet another hole put in me and I just had to squeeze someone's hand (luckily I had people there with me who could help with that). The peircist showed me all the equipment as usual and we filled out the papers. He cleaned my lip with antiseptics and put the mark where the hole was to be made and okayed it with me and my group of onlookers. He got all the equipment ready and his rubber gloves on and we got underway.

Finally I was all prepped to actually get peirced and I wasn't thinking much of it. It was just another peircing, I had done this before. The only difference was that this time I didn't know anyone who had ever had this done before and I didn't have any idea what to expect.

I sat in the chair waiting for him to finish getting ready for what seemed like an eternity with no idea what kind of pain I was about to go through. He finally got the clamp on my lip and grabbed the needle. Then the needle finally was shoved through my lip. I jumped and I could feel myself coming right up out of the chair. It hurt that bad. I wanted to scream but my lip wouldn't move so I sat in the chair with a somewhat stunned look on my face like someone had cut out my tongue and I couldnt scream or cry.

Usually when I got peirced the pain of the needle was bareable, or not even painful, but this time it hurt! But it wasn't over yet. The needle was sticking through my lip and I thought I was going to pass out at any moment then someone told me "it's not over yet, he still has to put the ring in." I didn't think I was going to make it. Then finally, he got the ring out and started to push it through the fresh hole. After much rithing in pain the ring was through and closed and I was finally done. It was over and yet it had just begun.

I looked at my new lip ring in te mirror and instantly fell in love. The group I had with me commented on how good it looked and how the procedure looked like it hurt prety bad. It was a lovely 12 gauge silver ring with a hematite ball on it. Perfectly centered, just as I wanted it.

After I was done I went outside and tried my first ciggarette after the whole episode. I had to learn it all over again but I wasn't a stranger to doing that, my tongue was the same way. I tried to drink and for about a week I had to have a straw to do it or else I drooled and spilled pop all over myself. My lip swelled a little but it wasn't too bad (compared to my tongue anyway). I was a little slow at doing everything from smoking to drinking and even talking got a bit hard at times but I survived it.

Cleaning it was a bit of a nuissance. The taste of hand soap in my mouth was never very pleasant, but I had to do it. I rinsed out my mouth and found that it burned if I didn't dilute it so I learned quite quickly to do that. It had to be about 3 parts water and 1 part mouthwash to be bareable. My lip ring wasn't too hard to take care of. It didn't induce much pain after the initial peircing and it wasn't all too burdensome with the amount of cleaning it had to have.

There wasn't much pain at all after the initial shock of the needle and after all that I know I won't be taking it out and having it done again just for sheer enjoyment. I have no regrets about getting it done though. I wouldn't recommend it as someone's first peircing. If you have the pain I did you're probably not going to want many more (and you should always want more). I actually recommend it, but with all the different point of views I've heard and my own experience, I don't think I could say for sure whether or not you'd be in pain when getting it done. But I'd have to say that you should go try it anyway!
