It is amazing and I have to say it's probably the best piercing I have; just down to some of the weirdest reactions I've ever had. Fun.
After reading a few stories on bmezine.com I have to say I did get slightly worried, due to the many unsuccessful stories out there, but the statement that it is a perfectly liable piercing if done correctly reassured me, so I went for it.
Thinking back I don't remember the walk up to Access All Areas in Nottingham, I tend to get a little bit nervous, but this passes and excitement took over (as it always does) as soon as I stepped in the shop, I couldn't wait to get a needle shoved through me again
So when my time was up, I followed Paddy into the clean studio and perched myself on the chair, never happier to be there. As usual we went through everything, down to the jewellery used (which by the way should be PTFE bar ONLY), diet advice and correct cleaning procedures.
After this came the most unpleasant part of the piercing process, the numbing. Yuk, the banana flavoured anaesthetic tasted disgusting, and the fact that it was numbed twice made it even worse but I got through it.
No clamp was used to my surprise....and after very careful positioning (Paddy told me you have to check for gaps in teeth and the centre, and folds in the tongue and resting positions.....all very confusing!) we were finally ready to pierce. Yey!
Here's the fun bit. Okay, so pushing a needle through both muscles in your tongue does hurt a little, but it was bearable due to the snail pace it was done at to get it perfect, and the pause in the middle of the two muscles to give me a break....my tongue was tired and kept relapsing back into my mouth; not my fault! The finally push through the other side did hurt, not a lot...but it hurt and the pressure put on the tongue when the jewellery was put through stung a lot but again, everything was fine and bearable.
To be honest, the piercing was more funny than painful, I couldn't stop dribbling all the way through....but what do you expect? Paddy didn't seem to mind so I wasn't bothered, and the result was absolutely stunning, so I didn't care one bit.
The week following was slightly painful, just that bruised feeling you get with any tongue piercing and a sort of numb twinge every now and then if I moved my tongue to fast. Yawning was a problem, catching then ends on my teeth so the bar got stuck and the flesh around it continued to stretch, not nice. Eating wasn't a real problem after about 1 or 2 days, but I fount my tongue got tired easy, and so resorted to the soup and soft food diet; joy. Cleaning was as easy as ever, mouthwash after every morsel of food seemed a habit after my last tongue piercing. I did have a slight lisp for about 1 and a half two weeks, and my friends enjoyed this immensely, trying to get me to say Mississippi (I fell out with one) however when I went back for my bar shortening I was assured this was all normal and it disappeared; very glad of that.
Overall, the piercing experience itself was only a bit more hassle than a normal tongue piercing in my opinion, and I've never regretted it...ever. Id recommend it to anyone who has the want for a rare and amazing piercing.
Few pointers: You have to be 18 – sorry!
PTFE should only be used and the balls on the end should be small.
The correct placing in the tongue is vital, and if your piercer hasn't done one before, don't trust him, because it could mess up your speech and diet forever. Honest.
Overall healing time is, I am told 6-8 months.
Mouthwash treatment isn't entirely necessary after 2-3 weeks.
Cost for me was £39.25...but I get discount, and so the normal price is £45, if you get it done cheap, it's not worth it, trust me, so don't stick your nose up!
Its recommended, so I followed this one through, that you take Arnica herbal tablets at least once a day a month prior to the piercing- this is a herbal tablet that encourages fast healing and reduces swelling; it's a month before to get it into your system. I bought theses at boots for about £4, bargain.
And you should avoid alcohol and smoking up to a few days before.
