I wanted to do something unexpected and fun after my exams last week. And I've wanted to get a piercing for some time now. So I decided to get a tongue piercing. At first I didn't like tongue piercings. I thought they were gross! But after a while I found them to be beautiful!

After searching on the internet for piercing parlors in Turku I found Bald Fellows. They were close, professional and people seemed to like them. So Bald Fellows it is! Bald Fellows... What a funny name. :)

This morning when I woke up I decided this is the day. Before I went I ate and drank a lot of water. I then brushed my teeth rigorously and set off for Bald Fellows. I was hoping not a lot of people would be there because I get nervous in crowds. When I arrived there were three girls looking at some jewelry. Damn! Oh well three isn't so bad. So I went up to the counter and asked a young girl if the piercer was in. She told me to go to the back where a saw girl with a couple of face piercings. She turned out to be the piercer. (Note to all: "If you meet someone who has a lot of piercings they're probably a piercer... or they just happen to like piercings.") :)

Jenni, the piercers name, told me to sit down in the chair. She took out a form and filled in the date etc. Then I had to fill in the rest while Jenni prepared everything. The form had questions like: "Do you have HIV or Hepatitis. Are you allergic to anything?" I just had to circle Yes or No so it went fast. Jenni was still preparing when I was done. I took a deep breath in. She asked me if I was nervous. A little, I said. I've donated blood a few times so I'm not afraid of needles but I'm piercing my tongue today! Of course I'm going to be a little nervous. But just a little. ;)

Jenni was wearing black latex gloves and everything she was taking out of the drawers was sealed in sterile packaging. She took a few sheets of paper towel and told me to tuck it under my chin to use as a apron. She also gave me a cup with disinfectant to wash my mouth with. (Later I learned it was Corsodyl.) Which I did. Ok she had everything ready now. She changed gloves and splashed some alcohol on them. She clamped my tongue really fast and started reaching for the needle. This is where I started to get nervous because I thought I was going to get to choose where she pierced. All I had told her was that I wanted a center-tongue piercing. Oh well! Let's hope for the best. She told me the whole breath in, breath out thing. I liked Jenni. Not only did she have a kind face that puts you at ease but she also talked very calmly. So I was pretty relaxed. I kept my eyes open the entire time but I didn't see the needle. But it was through. I felt it, but it wasn't pain that I felt. Only pressure. Much like how the clamp felt on my tongue. There was no blood or anything. Wow that was easy! I turned to take a look in the mirror. I was too far away to get a good look but it looked good. Just where I wanted it!

She then gave me two papers with instructions on how to care for your piercing and went through the important points. I paid 55 euro for the piercing. This isn't so much in my mind. The titanium bar was included after all and the staff was pleasant. After that I went straight to the pharmacy to buy Corsodyl. I also bought a new toothbrush. My old one was pretty worn out and probably infested with bacteria. When I got home a few minutes later, I took a good look in the mirror. The piercing looked great. There was still no swelling. But I bet there is going to be a lot of it tomorrow morning!

I recommend Bald Fellows to anyone who wants to get a piercing and happens to been in Turku. They also sell a lot of piercing jewelry. Their website is http://www.bfmyynti.fi

I'm thinking of not telling my friends and see how long it takes for them to notice. I'm pretty sure most of them are going to say: "Ewwww. Gross! or Why the hell did you do that?!" when they finally notice. Or then they're going to just say: "Oh ok." And secretly hate it and be disgusted. But I don't care. I'm starting to like my new piercing more and more as I'm typing this.

I can only hope your piercing experience is as delightful as mine was!
