My family isn't what I would call supportive when it come to piercings or any type of body mods, so it is no surprise that I couldn't wait for my 18th birthday. I had wanted my tongue pierced for 3 years, and on Feb 28th I did it! I was so excited, and very nervous. I tried to read everything about tongue piercing before I got it done so I would know what to expect. No one could have told me how excited I would be
(I am deathly afraid of needles)
I started out by surfing the web for piercing experiences just like this one months before I even knew what piercing I wanted. I looked on about a million sites with all different after care instructions. I never knew that there were some many ways to take care of a piercing. I ended up using a mouthwash called Biotene. I can't stand any other mouthwash now :) then, when I decided what I wanted, I was looking for all the neat kinds of jewelry I could buy. I ended up buying 5 barbells before I even I my tongue done. I just couldn't wait. I made an appointment the same day I bought jewelry.
My boyfriend and I went into this really small parlor called artrageous tattoo. He knew a guy that did piercing there. (I can't remember his name) When we walked in there was tattoo designs all over the place, I sat down next to a girl trying to talk her mom into letting her get her nose pierced. Joe (my boyfriend) started talking to the piercer, he gave us some forms and he told us he'd be able to pierce me in a few minutes.
It seemed to take forever, but he came out of this little room and said he was ready. I wanted to run out the door, but I wouldn't be able to live with myself if I didn't go thought with it. I sat down in a chair that would remind you of a dentist chair (for your information: I HATE dentist) and tried to relax. He put on a new pair of gloves and placed some paper towel on my lap, then handed me some so I could make a bib.
Next he pulled out these funny tongs. They were wrapped in plastic, and this is when I really stared to freak out. I knew he was getting ready to do it. He opened a pen-like thing and sat it on my lap. He said "This will be a little uncomfortable, but don't move I have to check for veins." He said that my tongue was perfect for piercing. He then took that pen and marked a little blue dot on the top and bottom of my tongue, at this point I just wanted to get it over with those clamps really hurt. He took off the clamps and asked if I like the placement. I didn't care I just wanted it done so badly, so I said yeah. Here comes that stupid clamp again. He took the needle he told me to breathe. Before I even knew it he was done. I felt it go through the bottom a little but it didn't hurt as bad as I thought it would.
I was so happy I was 18 and I finally had my tongue done! I fell in love with as soon as I seen it. He talked to me about after care of my piercing, and how I should try to avoid spicy foods. I couldn't believe it was real! You wouldn't believe how long that barbell was. He also told me that if I had any problems to call him. I felt like I was dreaming I went to bed so happy!
The next morning was without a doubt the weirdest thing. My tongue felt like it was 5 times too big for my mouth. I was terrified and happy all at once. The first thing I did was take some Ibuprofen. My piercer said that taking aspirin would thin the blood and cause problems so I bought this HUGE bottle of it that night. I also bought a ton of bottled water and a special mouthwash. It was a total live saver. Ice was my best friend in the entire world. My mom was having so much fun making fun of my speech. Joe tape-recorded me so he could make fun of me years from now. I was so frustrated, I couldn't eat, I hated that mouthwash, and I couldn't talk, I just wanted to take it out. I knew I couldn't but I wanted to all the same.
On my second day I tried eating a little bit of oatmeal. It was so messy, and I kept biting my tongue. I gave up after about an hour of this torture. I drank some milk and that was that. The next two weeks were pretty much the same. I still have my piercing and I don't think I am going to ever take it out. If you are thinking about getting it done, DO IT!
