Yeah so i've had the urge to get my tongue pierced probably since i was about 16, and i knew that the day i moved out of my parents house i would get it done. My parents are pretty conservative when it comes to piercing and tattoos, so i figured i'd show them some respect and wait until i left their house. As August came closer, i began to become more and more impatient. Well finally i went up to school for my freshman year and started to think about getting it pierced. As each day went by i wanted to do it more and more. I really didn't think it would be a big deal, i mean, I don't really have a fear of needles, and i figured the girls would love it, so i decided to get it done.

About 2 weeks after I got to school i made the decision to go through with it. After trying for about 45 minutes to find a car (I don't have a car at school this year), i was on my way, no to mention chain-smoking cigarettes because of the nervousness. I went to Asylum on Westnedge and paid my 45 bucks. The piercer chick was cool as hell. We went out and smoked a cigarette before she finally asked if i was ready, at which point i fearlessly ran back into the studio.

Sitting in the chair was really weird. It was like i was sitting at the dentist's office waiting to get a cavity drilled. The fact that the piercer was really friendly and talked about whatever made the whole thing a lot easier. She first made me rinse with listerine. Next thing i knew, i was watching her take a fresh needle out of the wrapper, and i knew there was no turning back. As she pushed the needle through, i surprisingly felt no pain whatsoever. The thing that probably hurt the most was when she screwed the barbell on. It really felt weird having something in my tongue, but i really liked it. I drove to walgreen's to get some listerine and felt really good. Until the next morning.

I woke up and didn't really feel anything. I thought i might have got lucky with no swelling until i took a good look in the mirror. My tongue was huge, even though i couldn't feel it. I religiously used listerine after smoking and drinking so i wouldn't get an infection. The next challenge was eating.

I've got a really high metabolism, so basically i eat all day and don't really get fat, so basically i can't stand having to wait to eat. Well, eating was definitely a challenge. I could barely fit anything more than a really small bite in my mouth, it really felt weird and kinda hurt to eat. I figured that was no big deal, so i decided to just ignore it. Three days later, i got just too fed up with not being able to eat so i decided to take the barbell out.

Taking it out was one of the hardest things i had to do. The barbell screwed in on the bottom of my tongue, so had to lift my swollen (and still kinda sore) tongue up and unscrew it. This was a lot harder than it sounds. Because of my tounge being sore, this just irritated it even more, and i finally unscrewed it after probably about my tenth try. I pulled the barbell out and rinsed with listerine.

I was really pissed at myself as soon as the hole closed up. After all, i just made it through three days, so that meant i probably would have only had to deal with the awkwardness for another day or two. Now it's two months later, I'm sitting at my parent's computer the day after Thanksgiving, and i've made another decision. As soon as i go back to school tomorrow, i'm going to get my tongue pierced again. Even though i'm coming home in two weeks i don't really care. I'll hide it from my parents, and if they see it, they're just going to have to deal with it.

To anyone who just got their tongue pierced or is thinking about it - don't do what i did. Just deal with the pain cause you're gonna want it back in your mouth the second you take it out. Trust me. Oh yeah i heard someone at school say that Asylum is a shitty place to get a piercing but this girl had no idea what she was talking about. I'm definitely going back there. They were clean, professonal, and very down-to-earth. So, if you ever find yourself in Kalamazoo and want a piercing, go to Asylum and DO IT!
