"There's morris in that tattoo"

December of 1998, my stepdancing partner of 5 years was killed in an accident. I had taught classes with him, played music with him, performed with him, published a book with him, and practiced 2 or 3 times a week with him. When we practiced, we tried to match our body movements to make us look and sound like once dancer. When Terry died, I felt that a huge portion of my life had been ripped away from me. Terry's 8-year-old son asked me to go with him to the funeral home to view the body one last time before ... read more

My Tattooing & Piercing Experience

me begin by saying I have always wanted a tattoo, but I was told only white trash, bikers, or drug addicts had their bodies marked in such a way. I have also been drawn to the all black Tribal and Celtic designs that began to show up on girls and guys several years ago. I am what most people would consider a successful professional; I graduated college Summa Cum Laude. I have been married 17 years and have two wonderful children. I suffered sexual abuse by several of my male cousins until I was 15. I told no one about ... read more

All hail A&D!

er having recently received my fifth tattoo, I have formed some very strong opinions regarding the correct way to heal them. Most specifically, these opinions center around the proper ointment to use, which I feel is A&D. I got my first tattoo about five years ago, when I was 19 and living in my native California. It was definitely a beginner tattoo—a small sun and moon that intertwine on my ankle around my sun and moon astrological signs. I know, I know, it sounds very girlie but I did design it myself and I still like it. At the time ... read more

The regeneration of my life through piercings and tattoos

ad gone to the local watering hole with my life partner immediately after having had my nipples pierced. Now that the deed was done, I felt liquid courage was in order. After several rounds of 'show-and-tell', one guy, still dressed in a suit from work, leaned over and asked "Why?" in a sarcastic tone of voice. I couldn't answer any better than because I wanted it. I am near forty years old. Several years ago I began my personal rebellion of my Southern, Bible-Belt upbringing. I cropped my hair, almost shaven, pierced my ears and grew facial hair. I left ... read more

My Third Tattoo Story

February 27, 199, I went to American Skin Art (in North Tonawanda, New York) to get a tattoo along with one of my friends and my girlfriend. It was my third tattoo, and I decided to get a Star of David on the face of my right shoulder, filled in to resemble deep space. I got my first two tattoos at the same shop, both within the previous year, and I really trusted the environment. The shop is clean, friendly, well decorated, and comfortable. My friend (Jay), his girlfriend (Meghan), and I arrived at the shop on Friday at 1:00 ... read more

Nipple Stars

March of 1997, I got my nipples and areolae tattooed with bright red stars. When I started the project, I had a hell of a time finding any useful information, and every once in awhile, I get e-mail from someone else who is interested in doing something similar, so I thought I would put my experience here, where it is easily findable. First off, (to answer the question that I'm sure is on your mind) they really didn't hurt that much. Seriously. I realize that everyone is different when it comes to this stuff, but as a point of comparison, ... read more

Third Tattoo

up for my third tattoo. I called Keith and made the appointment for Thursday, April 29 at 1 PM. This next tattoo I designed myself. Its a circular tat with a lightning bolt running through the middle of it. On the left side is the sun and on the right is the moon. It'll be done in a variety of colors. The lightning bolt will be done in two shades of yellow - basic yellow and neon yellow. The sun will be orange, red, basic yellow and neon yellow and the moon will be done in light blue and dark ... read more

My Rite of Passage Tattoo

r since I was a young boy I wanted a tattoo, but as I approached the age of 18 I could not decide what design I wanted or where on my body I wanted it. The more magazines I looked at the more confused I became. I knew the tattoo would be forever and I wanted to make the right decision. On my 18th birthday on July 1 I had decided to get the tattoo, but at the last minute I chickened out. I was afraid of what my family would think. I had never discussed this with them for ... read more

My most recent tattooing experience

ust moved to New Jersey a few months ago, and since the birth of my son in February, I had been looking for places in my area to get some ink done. My last tattoo was done over a year ago, by a really great artist named Josh, (unfortunately, I cannot remember his last name to save my life.... ahhh, the burdens of having a crappy short-term memory and also being too damn lazy to write the important things down...) who, at the time, worked for Instant Gratification in Ybor City, Florida. I really miss that place; I've gotten all ... read more

First tattoo @ the outback

lways wanted a tattoo. In my country (I am from Singapore) tattoo is hardly considered as a form of art. Most people over here consider people with tattoos are gangsters as it was once used as a form of identification for secret society members, and seems like this notion will be here to stay for quite a while. The media here isn¹t helping much either as when every some crime is committed by some tattooed people, the headline will be like "crime is committed by yet another tattooed man". There isn¹t any formal organization for the tattoo artists here or ... read more
