Yesterday I got my first tattoo, and just to make it a little different. I had it in white. I'm 19 and have wanted a tattoo for about 5yrs, Id planned on getting one as soon as I hit 18, but because my boyfriend wasn't keen I put it on hold. About a month ago, he said he wouldnt mind a tattoo if it was something discreet, so after thinking about it I thought white would be a good option. We talked it over and he agreed that would be fine. I am the first person in my family to ...

I have wanted a tattoo for as long as I can remember. Since childhood, I have been fascinated by the ability of people to record life events and important personal memories on the canvas of skin. Nobody in my family had tattoos and my parents were not very approving of them, so out of respect for my parents, I didn’t proceed with getting one although I certainly had opportunities along the way to do it. I grew to adulthood and made it to the age of 42 before finally going under the needle. As a pastor, there was some apprehension ...

Wow just reading the title of my story makes me feel like a child. Oh well. April 2009, just after my 18th birthday was the date I chose to get my first tattoo. I'd always wanted one but my mother is a very traditional Mexican and my father, a Puerto Rican all about success and overcoming the white man (seeing body modification as an obstacle). So naturally I had to wait until I turned 18 to get a tattoo. I had been thinking about getting a tattoo since I was in middle school and I'm definitely not the type of ...

Like pretty much every person on this site, I've been interested in body modification since my (much older) cousin showed me her navel piercing when I was about six years old. That summer spent in London kicked off my obsession, and I always remembered her mentioning the area she had all her mods done. Of course, I was a little kid and didn't know anything about mods other than they were “pretty” and coming from a small town where cartilage piercings were considered odd made me think there was only one place with shops for body modification. In the summer ...

Our story begins, as these stories often do, with a young boy dreaming of becoming a pirate. Pirates have wooden legs, scurvy, eye-patches and monstrous tattoos filling their big, hairy, Caribbean-sun burnt arms. I guess you know where this story is heading already. Honestly I have no exact memory of when I encountered tattoos for the first time but I'm pretty sure it was through comic books rather than actual events from real life. I grew up in a pretty secluded village where the only ones with tattoos were the ones considered to be feared. Or maybe they just seemed ...

My first tattoo is something I've wanted and yet put off since I turned 18. I'd wanted it for even longer, in fact, since 17. I love the look of tattoos, and have always seen myself as almost a tattooed person without tattoos – although I’d always said I didn’t want too many (yes, “too many” is subjective and arbitrary – more on that later!) The reason behind the design came about when I was 17 too. A very close family friend (Like an uncle to me - he was there for me more than a lot of my "actual" ...

To understand who I am, one must understand how I was raised. I was born in the deep south, to parents with strong Southern Baptist parents. I was raised to believe that alcohol was the devil, only tramps got tattoos, and if you "shacked up", you would go straight to Hell. For the most part, I allowed myself to stay within the parameters of my upbringing. I got married at the age of 20, becuase my mother and I had a HUGE fight over telling my grandparents I planned to "shack up". Fortunately, my 31st birthday is in 3 days, ...

I can’t pinpoint the exact moment that I started thinking about getting tattoos & piercings. All I knew is that I wanted a tattoo of Dopey from Snow White. It was a nickname of mine because I was short & had a tendency to wear oversized clothes. I started collecting Dopey items when I was about 17 & had the idea for the tattoo when I was 19. Here’s a little background. It was March of 1999. I was a freshman, attending a small liberal arts college that was about 45 minutes away from my hometown of Hutchinson, Kansas. The ...

The story of my thigh tattoos. The lead up: I booked my appointment a couple of months back, and initially my artist (Ben at Tattoo City in Wellington, New Zealand) thought it might take around five hours to do, so we booked me in for half a day. I wanted red bows on the back of each thigh, and brought in colour samples and pictures of the style I was after. I also got allergy tested for red ink which involved putting ink samples under large bandages to check for a red or raised skin reaction, and then waited for ...
