While I was growing up, things weren't always easy at home - I experienced an unreal amount of death and violence for someone my age. Part of my trying to cope was to cut myself. I did this for a lot of years and have a lot of quite ugly scars as a result. But I wouldn't want to be without my scars, because they, like my tattoos, have come to represent a big part of who I am. It was only after I met my boyfriend that I realised how much what I was doing hurt the people I ...

So, for a while I've been working on a project on my left arm, a full sleeve of stars. Which will eventually (if all goes to plan) extend onto my back and chest. I moved from the UK to live with my girlfriend in Berlin about 6 months ago and thought the time was ripe to add a few more. I've had all of my stars (except for 3 on my inner forearm) done in England. So now I had the task of finding a studio with a good reputation to work with. The first studio I went to was ...

Ok, so my first tattoo experience was two years ago. I was so tired of piercing and mad haircuts/colors... I wanted something to really capture 'me' and to show who I was to the world. I hate to blend with the masses, After all, there is only one 'me' and one 'you'. There is a lot of stigma still attached to neck tattoos or just visible tattoos in general, which really annoys me! Especially as Ireland is not the most open-minded of countries. So I'm putting out a good word for all us girls who to like ink! I believe ...

I've been raised to respect authority. I'm a privileged person in the aspect that my parents have tried to give me everything they never had, and more. This being said, I must also then state, my father is whole heartedly against tattoos, piercings and any other body modification you can name or even think of. My mother agrees with modest piercings (i.e. the side of the nose and the ears, perhaps the belly button, but thats about as far as it goes for her, although I doubt she would care as much if it weren't for my fathers solid view ...

I got my first tattoo in 2007, when I 18 (the legal age in the UK) after a breakup with my first proper boyfriend. The break up had been coming for a long time but it was still a hell of a shock to the system when the time came to actually tell my then boyfriend that I no longer wanted to be with him. We had been together since the night after 'prom' (so clichéd I know) when we were 16 and had been sort of together throughout out school years, we had grown up together. He was my ...

When I first turned eighteen my lifelong best friend and I decided to get matching tattoos. We both received a small pair of angel wings on the back of our necks. About four months later I was craving a new piece of ink. I decided since I was starting college in about a month this summer was the most appropriate time to get my second. After much consideration I decided to get a black and white Camellia flower tattooed on my rib cage. The flower was a symbol for my mom who is a landscape artist, it is a very ...

I had been wanting to get a tattoo for as long as I could remember and now I was finally 18, I was going for it! So I went into Xanchies, a tattoo parlour near my house, and got a quote for my very first tattoo. I wanted three large stars down my back ranging from about 15 cm to 7 cm across. They told me they would so it for about $380 which I was fine with. I booked in for the following Saturday and spend the next 4 days getting more and more excited. Saturday morning came and ...

My parents had never been the type, my Father at least, to look down on things that would be considered 'taboo' by the general public, especially tattoos. Having a few of his own it had always been a good experience for him and, in a way; he passed that on to me. We used to live in a small town in Pennsylvania, and there was a tattoo shop that my parents would go to and where they knew the owner quite well. It wasn't like tattoo shops now-a-days (even though this wasn't really that long ago) but it was kind ...

I have two works of art of my body. Two butterflies, both with similar meaning, but one with moreso than the other. My second tattoo is a constant reminder of the pain I have suffered and also of the woman who brought me through the pain. Background: Almost all of the way through my senior year of high school, I met an incredible woman. She was a new teacher at my school this year, but due to the fact that she taught underclassmen, I never saw her. Near the end of year, I was asked to tutor seventh graders in ...
