A Prayer for Life

For several years I'd wanted a tattoo to add to my small but growing display of modifications on my body. The problem had been finding something that would have as much meaning fifty years from now as it did now. I'd hit on something years ago, during some studies of my family, and fiercly into the Rom side, a prayer that was in Slov-Romani. Of course it got shelved with the other ideas, until; four piercing, two new scars and a divorce later, I hit back upon it. I'd decided that I really didn't want to get image tattoos to ... read more

The journey of getting my first tattoo

When I was seventeen, I was looking forward to turning eighteen for only one reason: getting tattoos. While others my age were trying to sneak into bars with fake ID's, I was trying to find a way to get a tattoo as soon as possible. Growing up in Tonawanda, NY (a suburb of Buffalo), I always heard stories of people going up to Canada to get tattooed before they were eighteen. Even though I knew my mother would hate it, I made it my goal to get a tattoo in the great white north. Not having a license myself, I ... read more

Rib cage tattoo= P.A.I.N.

So I've been wanting a rib cage tattoo for the longest time. I have done alot of research and came to the conclusion that 99.9% of people say that it hurts like hell. So I was prepared to be a little uncomfortable. (little did I know) I have several tattoos, a big one on my lower back, on my butt, on my foot, and on my hip. I have my nipple pierced (which hurt terribly), home done nose, tounge, rook, and my upper and lower naval. So I've had some painful experiences. After doing some design research I found a ... read more

Tattoo with meaning

Three days ago I sat for 90 minutes while a tattoo artist named Geoff tattooed a phoenix in flames on my right shoulder. This is the story of how I came to have my first tattoo, both the psychological journey and the actual physical experience of getting my first tattoo. If you have never had a tattoo, and are thinking of getting one, I hope this provides you with another perspective and gives you some information about what to expect when you get a tattoo. For several years now, I have wanted a tattoo. I've always thought of tattoos as ... read more

Learning to breathe

I am older than the average person getting tattoos these days--though I'm far from the oldest. But here, chronologically in middle age, I find getting tattooed a powerful and immensely satisfying means of expressing the fact that a life is a work of art, a sculpture not in three dimensions but in n dimensions. Powerful life experiences get inscribed on our bodies one way or another--whether by scars, wrinkles, changes in posture, or a hundred other means. It seems to me profoundly human to take that process into my own hands, to design small pieces of art to ritualize that ... read more

Tattoo Removal

When I turned 18 I knew I wanted to get a tattoo. I got my first tattoo a week after I turned 18, it was on my ribcage. The tattoo is of gardenias and spiders. It turned out really well so i decided I would go to the same guy to get my half sleeve done. I decided to get a graveyard and a grim reaper. I got it to signify the death of my teenage cutting habit. So basically this tattoo was a scar cover up. My tattoo is on my lower arm. Left side. It starts with a ... read more

Have a Tattoo of something that means something to you not to impress others

Around 8 years ago I had my boyfriends name done on me in Cantonese. I went to a rubbish tattooist in a nearby town and he kind of put me off. First of all I had to wait to hours to get my Tattoo done the Tattooist barely spoke to me before taking me in and was like sit down applied the transfer and was like that alright? The Tattooist also arrived to the shop over one hour late. I was told to bend over a tiny stool in a ratty little room and was moaned at for slightly moaning ... read more

Tattoos on Toes

I got my first tattoo done yesterday, and since I have found so much useful information in the experiences of other BME users, I figured I would return the favor and write in with an experience of my own. I've always wanted to get tattoos, ever since I was a little kid, but I took my time in deciding exactly what I wanted, and where I wanted it. I have a few ideas of tattoos I'd like to get in the future, but I wanted to find one that would really be perfect as a 'first' for me. I went ... read more

Getting my wings...

While I was growing up, things weren't always easy at home - I experienced an unreal amount of death and violence for someone my age. Part of my trying to cope was to cut myself. I did this for a lot of years and have a lot of quite ugly scars as a result. But I wouldn't want to be without my scars, because they, like my tattoos, have come to represent a big part of who I am. It was only after I met my boyfriend that I realised how much what I was doing hurt the people I ... read more

Stars Towards The Sleeve - Original Yeah?

So, for a while I've been working on a project on my left arm, a full sleeve of stars. Which will eventually (if all goes to plan) extend onto my back and chest. I moved from the UK to live with my girlfriend in Berlin about 6 months ago and thought the time was ripe to add a few more. I've had all of my stars (except for 3 on my inner forearm) done in England. So now I had the task of finding a studio with a good reputation to work with. The first studio I went to was ... read more
