When I was seventeen, I was looking forward to turning eighteen for only one reason: getting tattoos. So I've been wanting a rib cage tattoo for the longest time. I have done alot of research and came to the conclusion that 99.9% of people say that it hurts like hell. But here, chronologically in middle age, I find getting tattooed a powerful and immensely satisfying means of expressing the fact that a life is a work of art, a sculpture not in three dimensions but in n dimensions. When I turned 18 I knew I wanted to get a tattoo. I got my first tattoo a week after I turned 18, it was on my ribcage. The tattoo is of gardenias and spiders. Around 8 years ago I had my boyfriends name done on me in Cantonese. I went to a rubbish tattooist in a nearby town and he kind of put me off. While I was growing up, things weren't always easy at home - I experienced an unreal amount of death and violence for someone my age. Part of my trying to cope was to cut myself. So, for a while I've been working on a project on my left arm, a full sleeve of stars. Which will eventually (if all goes to plan) extend onto my back and chest.
