Eyebrow + helix

So a couple days ago I decided to head into Planet Ink in Ottawa for a couple new piercings. They have a 2 for $85 deal which I obviously had to take advantage of. I think on Wednesdays it's 2 for $65 but I'm not from Ottawa and I was only going to be there for a few days so I just took what I could get. I went in on a Sunday at like 11 am, and to my surprise the piercer was in and available. In my hometown we have one tattoo parlor and the piercer is only ... read more

Helix Piercing

I had my helix pierced around two months ago, and I guess it was almost predetermined by my previous tragus piercing.  While in most cases the act, ritual, process, whatever you want to call it, of undergoing the piercing has been symbolic (the pain of change, control over my own physicality, expressing/releasing/manifesting a moment of or period of emotional pain, etc) the placement has always been purely asthetic and serves as nothing more or less than a function of how I want myself to look in the long run.  Being a male I have never wanted symmetry of the piercings ... read more

When Piercing Cartilage; The Pros and Cons

So, to start, I am a self professed piercing junkie. The majority of what I have resides on either my earlobes or the outer shell. As of now, I have one tragus, six cartilage, and 6 stretched piercings on my lobes. Two at 0's, two at 4's, and two at 6's (gauge). However, the one place I've always found to be a pain was my cartilage. I've pierced (or re-pierced) all six of my cartilage piercings and let me tell you, it never gets easier. The skin can swell, it can go bloody, the cartilage may be pierced through but ... read more

My Snug Triple Cartilage

As a teenager, I am very eager to have holes put into my body! Other teenagers spend their money on shoes, and makeup. I spend it on holes, and jewelry to put through those holes. (And makeup, of course.) So, my journey begins at thirteen. I begged my mother (more like bugged) for months to let me have my second lobes done. She finally waned, and said I could get as many blasted ear piercings done as I wanted. She only said this after I asked for a lip piercing. My two options in return were as many ear piercings ... read more

Double Helix, Double Pain

I've had an interest in body modification for a few years. After my first holes, I was satisfied for a few years. When I was 14, I fell in love with double lobes. After much pleaing, bargaining, and persistance, I got my second pair of piercings at 15. However, I wanted more. I set my eyes on a double helix after seeing a picture of a woman with a CBR on the bottom hole, and a stud on top. It was beautiful. So I set about trying to convince my parents to let me get my cartilage pierced. My mom ... read more

My first cartilage

Ever since I got my second holes in my ears, I had really wanted my cartilage done too. As cliched as this sounds, piercings (as I'm sure tattoos) are really addictive. The only thing stopping me from going ballistic with piercings is getting a professional job out of college :-( (it really sucks that people are still so freaking judgmental today). I'm usually very good with needles, but I had heard stories where people said it was painful and that some people's ears had swelled up after infections and it made me nervous. I researched all the possible things that ... read more

DIY inner conch

Let me just start off by saying that you should not pierce yourself if you don't have to. A lot can go wrong and professionals really know what they're doing. That being said, do not go out and get pierced anywhere that uses guns. I have been horrified to see my friends with new piercings, only to find out that they got it done with a gun. Not just lobes, either. I'm talking tragus piercings and helix piercings. Don't do it! Guns are bad. Anyway, back to my conch. I've always wanted a big ring around my ear, so one ... read more

My conch – just keep pushing!

Shortly after I had my helix pierced, I started to get the itch again for another piercing. I started researching other sites, and finally settled on 3 options. Either adjacent to my helix, my tragus, or my snug. The tragus was looking unlikely, however, one Friday I went out to lunch, and our waiter had a most curious piercing in her ear. Right inside it. When I went home, I researched it and found that it was the inner conch. I knew at that point that that was the one for me. I was a bit short on funds at ... read more

Don't be afraid of the pain

Even though I only have 4 piercings now, over the last 15 years i have actually gotten pierced ... 17 times. I am a bit surprised now that I had to think back and do a count - it's a lot of times considering I only have 3 visible rings. They are in my upper cartilage. Some of them were repiercings and some of them are retired or I really only got them to experience getting them and the liberating feeling of doing something family, society but mostly my own inhibition had held me back from doing. Anyway, I want ... read more

A tame Beginning - My helix

I have craved a cartilage piercing of some sort ever since I was 12 - when I saw an older teenager with one. She wore it like a crown, the shine drawing the eye down the graceful curve of her ear. This was absolutely, non negotiably out of the question for my conservative family. Piercings were for those...other people. So, I bided my time, with frequent discussions with my Mum to see if her mind had spontaneously changed, and finally, 10 years later when it was still a firm, absolute no, took the plunge. I did a bit of research, ... read more
