My DIY cartilage experience gone bad

Ok so first I would like to say that I have my navel, nose and 4 piercings in each ear and had the middle near the cartilage in my right ear done and I've never had any problems with them. They all healed up perfectly well.

So it was last saturday night (October 18, '08) and my friend samantha was spending the night. And after a long night of downing caffeine and talking about ex boyfriends Samantha suddenly turns to me, at 2 o'clock in the morning, and says "Hey Nessa I wanna pierce my cartilage". I had always thought about having it done but it wasn't something I wanted to run right out and do and I always thought I would have it professionally done with a gun. So after calling up my boyfriend and having him tell me "Dude that would look so fuckin hot, DO IT!" I decided to pierce her ear and let her do mine.

Now I'm not a professional of any kind, but I have pierced 3 holes in one ear and 4 in the other ear and pierced 3 of my friends ears. So I got out a needle (which i really don't like using, I usually use the sharp piercing earrings you get when your ear is done with a gun)and I sprayed it with bactine then sprayed her ear marked it off and sprayed again. On the count of three I pushed the needle through felt a pop and it was done so I pulled it out and put in a silver earring. Then she decides she wants her 3rd holes on her lobes done so I get the needle spray it and poke it in the first hole and she does really well with that one but on the other one she looked alittle faint but I put the ring in and cleaned off the little spot of blood. She was done and very happy.

Now my turn, I sat down and clipped my hair back. I could feel the adrenaline pumping through my body this is the point right before a piercing I love, when i get all jumpy and everything seems intense. She sprayed off the same needle (very stupid I know I should have just got a new one) and sprayed my ear. She marked where she thought it would look cute and counted to three, she pushed the needle through and I felt a popping and sharp pain but nothing unbearable. She wasn't done she had to finish pushing it all the way through so she counted to three again and pushed it in. It didn't bleed too bad until she took the needle out she said "oh no it's bleeding alittle" and just as I looked down I see blood gushing all down my ear shoulders and chest(I'm a bit of a chicken when it comes to seeing blood so i freaked out a little bit). She cleaned it up and stuck a cheap wal mart earring through (stupid I know) I sprayed it again and went to bed.

I woke up the next morning and my ear hurt alittle bit but I went through the day fine and I thought it was gonna heal fine, I mean Samanthas looked so good and seemed to be healing well. I noticed 3 days ago that it was swelling up and turning really red and hurt really bad. I left it alone and then last night I was going to clean it up but I saw it looked like my ear was swallowing the earring and it had puss all around it so I thought I should change the ring to gold because I had used the little gold balls in my eyes I leave them in for atleast 4 weeks before I change them and I never had a problem. I sprayed it and took the earring out and I saw that it had a puss plug where the hole was and it was red so I wiped the puss away with a q-tip and saw that it was just a big hole in my cartilage about a 14g.

So now I have to deal with this. I did some stupid things while piercing my ear that I never usually never do and now I have to pay the price. Who knows if it will heal up well? Its all crusty and nasty right now and the hole is very big and very obvious. When I showed it my mom she thinks I may have to go to the hospital and I'm sure my ear doesn't look "fuckin hot".

I urge you not to do at home piercings with cheap metal and to always use a new needle (if you choose to use one) between each piercing.
