Sassy Sternum Piercing!
I had been toying with the idea of a sternum piercing for about six months. It was something I had wanted to do, but was nervous about getting, due to the pain factor. I knew a girl who had a nape piercing and she said it hurt worse than any other piercing she had, so that didn't exactly put me at ease, but anyway, fast forward to that fateful day... I went with my friend to get her tattoo done by Dan...I sat there with her for 2 1/2 hours, and hearing the familiar buzz of the tattoo gun got me thinking that I wanted something done too!
After taking care of payment, we hung around and talked story with him. Somehow the idea of getting my friend's belly button pierced on the bottom came up, and she debated the idea. I on the other hand, started thinking about that sternum piercing again...My friend and I talked for a bit, and decided what the hell, why wait, let's do it.
I decided to get pierced first so I wouldn't have a chance to chicken out (like I felt like doing). Dan went upstairs first so he could bend the jewelry into a surface bar. Me and my friend followed suit 2 minutes later. I must've asked Dan how much it would hurt a million times. But being the patient, cool guy he is, he didn't get irritated at me, he just reassured me and said "it won't hurt more than your tongue" (which I had just gotten done by him the previous day). I sat down in the chair and Dan asked me to squeeze my boobies together, so he could find the placement. He marked two dots on my sternum, and made me squeeze the girls together again so he could double check. Next, I checked it out for myself in the mirror, decided it looked perfect, and sat back down. I was so nervous, I tried not to think about anything that was happening. I tried not to look at that giant needle, and when he told me to take a deep breath in and then let it out, I think I nearly passed out. No clamps were used in the process, which I liked, because I know they can cause undue trauma to the skin, but he sure did squeeze that sternum skin HARD! During the breathe out, I felt the needle going in my skin, bottom to top, and my whole body tensed up. I must've also made a face, because Dan asked me if I was okay, I said I was, and he continued on. Finally the needle got all the way through, Dan turned around to get the jewelry to insert it, and i looked down to find that giant needle stuck in the middle of my chest. It was a funny feeling. I was halfway there! Dan pulled the needle out, and started inserting the surface bar, which was the least painful part of the whole process. Don't be fooled, it was still sore, but felt like pinching instead of stabbing, and my body was still clenched up, nevertheless. He screwed the balls on, and I was done! Weeeeeeeeee! I checked it out in the mirror, and it was l o v e!
(And yes, it DID hurt more than a tongue piercing. It hurt more than my nipple AND my tragus piercings too, but I'm glad he told me it wouldn't, or else maybe I wouldn't have gone through with it!)
I am so happy with my sternum piercing. This happened 3 days ago, and I think it's doing really good. I haven't had any pain with it, and very little redness. People who see it are surprised it isn't swollen or irritated looking, since it's so new. Yesterday it started to get a little itchy, I think that means it's healing...Although today it hasn't been itchy at all. I've been washing daily with Dial liquid soap, and I stopped in at Dan's shop again last night so he could check it out and clean it up some more. I am crossing my fingers that me and my body can heal this piercing. I know they don't have very high succession rates, and I will be super bummed out if it rejects from my skin. But I've decided that if it does, I will have him pierce it again for me. All in all, my first surface piercing was a success, and this won't be my first and last. I'm definitely interested in corset piercings, but only time will tell what's in store for me. Dan is amazing. I highly recommend him to everyone I talk to about piercings or tattoos. He makes people feel at ease, has very reasonable prices, and is personable and a lot of fun. Plus, he always has a stash of candy! His shop has a good vibe too! This is the 9th piercing I have recieved from him (I also have one tattoo he did on me), and I will never go to anyone else again.
