One woman's entry into the

n my body piercing experiences way back in the early 90's when I decided to have my tongue pierced. At that time, tongue piercing was a fairly new thing here in the Reno area. Had to have it! Got it! Angela Giffhorn of Black Hole Body Piercing had just opened her first shop on California Avenue in Reno and she put me completely at ease the moment I stepped into her shop. The experience itself left me breathless, excited and beautifully pierced. Angela is a pro all the way around. Since that time, Angela's shop has grown into THE body piercing shop in this area. She no longer occupies a small hole in the wall, but now has a wonderfully quaint house right on Reno's main drag, Virginia Street. Well, Angela moved up, and so did I. I've had my tongue, nostril, navel, nipples, lubrette, and most recently, my hood pierced. I wouldn't think of having any piercings done by any shop other than Black Hole. Angela did all my piercings except for one, my lubrette, which was done by one of Angela's associates and another pro, Jess Brown. I've always thought body modification is a beautitul and unique way of expression, some more than others. I wear a "full sleeve" on my left arm which is quite beautiful, but not the usual female-type hearts and flowers stuff; it's strickly heavy art work. I had that done way back in '85. Yeah, of course I have quite a few other tats, too, including what I call my "mark of commitment" which is a personal piece of artwork that my husband, Donovan, designed for us. That one was placed on my neck and easily seen at all times. The idea of tattooing one's neck still seems to be frowned upon by lightweights, though, since it cannot be as easily covered as tattoos on other parts of the body. Before I got into the piercing scene I'd seen others who'd had their tongues pierced and wondered about the experience. I thought about it for months before I decided to get mine done. I was nervous and excited at the same time. After the procedure I was amazed at how I felt about the experience, and how I felt about many different aspects of my life. Piercing does that for you! It's a funny thing...I used to think I kept getting pierced because I liked the jewelry! What a laugh! I've come to realize that the total piercing experience, and the introspective view it gives me of who I am, not the jewelry, or how I am perceived by others, is what keeps me coming back for more. Piercing is definitely addicting, but, man! What a high! And it's legal! Oh...did I mention that I also have an "Earl"? That's probably my most favorite of all my piercings, and serves as a daily reminder to me that I must stay centered in all that I do. Also, because the "Earl" occupies the space between my eyebrows, I think it is the most beautiful of all my piercings, and definitely the most exotic. Not everyone can wear one of these special marks of distinction because many people's skin tolerance in that particular location rejects the bar. I was lucky. But then, I had the best artist doing the work, and that makes all the difference in the world. Also, about Angela's shop...everyone who works there is a professional and conducts themselves as such at all times. If there's ever any questions or problems they're only a phone call or visit away, and are always more than happy to give the best advise on any problem that might arise. Again, I've been lucky; I've never had a minute's discomfort or any problems with any of my piercings. About the healing. I've never had any problems with any of my piercings. I've gotten pierced, taken good care of myself, and healed in record times. The hardest piercing to heal is the navel, and it took mine months before it was totally healed completely. Clothing restrictions delay normal air flow and circulation in that area, which, of course slows the healing process. But now mine has healed very nicely. Angela used to nag me not to wear restrictive clothing after I got it done. But, tight pants are what I prefer to wear, so it took a little longer for me to heal than it would have otherwise. My nipples were quick to heal. That was surprising to me. I love this particular piercing and wear large balls in the straight bars to accentuate my nipples through my clothes. Body piercing is the most sensual thing I've ever done for myself. It's taught me a lot about who I am and what I enjoy. Thanks, Angela, for helping me get clued in. At 50+, it's about time!
