a celebration - getting my first piercings
I had my first piercings last week, and want to tell you about them and why.
I'm a 46 year old man who has recently had depression. It took two years to go away, but I woke up one day a few months ago and it was over. It felt like a fresh start and for some reason it seemed worth marking. I had no tattoos or piercings at all, but I just knew it had to be something on me, for me, to celebrate getting my life back together.
I have a conservative, professional job so it had to be something that would be out of sight at work, and so looked around for ideas. I came across bmezine.com and as soon as I saw guys my age with pierced nipples I just knew it was what I was looking for.
Having read just about all the experiences I could find from people who have had their nipples pierced (and skated over the bad ones) and read reviews of the piercers in my area, I visited a couple and chose Holier Than Thou in Manchester since they seem to have a good reputation.
I can't tell you how nervous I felt just calling them up, but it's not far off the feelings just before you get called for your Driving Test. I called their number: Davina at the shop was warm and welcoming on the phone, explained everything and left me to make up my mind. No pressure sales at all.
The next day I drove down to the shop feeling really calm, certain that I was doing the right thing but not really thinking too hard about the details. Looking through the window the place looked as clean and organised as my Dentist's surgery which gave me great confidence.
Once in the shop I was pretty nervous but Davina and Marcus (the piercing guy) talked me through the process from beginning to end, went through the pricing, gave me the medical questionnaire and consent form to fill in and told me about aftercare.
There was no-one else there, so no reason to delay and it was through to the studio which was again spotlessly clean. Marcus had already set up whilst we were chatting and the needles, barbells and the other gear were ready and waiting on the table in their sterile packs. I took my shirt off and Marcus wiped antiseptic cleanser around my nipples and marked where the barbells would go. After a check in the mirror to confirm that the marks looked straight he had me lie down on the bench. "It'll all be over in a minute" he said. "I'll clamp the nipple with these forceps, then you take a big breath in and as you breathe out I will push the needle through. Then you will feel a small drag as the barbell goes in and it's done. Then the same again on the other side when you are ready".
People who have had piercings done before will no doubt be pretty casual and ready for what happens next, but since this was my first time all I can say is WOW! I have never felt anything like it. Breathe in, then as you breathe out you feel the needle go through really fast like a quick stab and then the biggest surge of endorphins ever. What a rush! By then the barbell is in and the ball has been screwed on and it's done. Marcus checked how I was feeling. OK I think I felt a bit strange but OK. I don't know what I thought it would feel like but I never imagined it would be like that. He suggested I take a minute to rest before he did the second one. After a few seconds I was ready and the other one was just as quick. With two sticking plasters to cover the piercings the job was done.
After a couple of minutes to let my body recover from the endorphin explosion I get to look at my new piercings in the mirror. They are Beautiful. Fantastic. Perfect.
Whilst I was getting dressed and paying the bill (pretty reasonable at £45 all in for two titanium barbells) he told me to expect them to bleed a bit for a day or so and to bathe them twice a day in boiled and cooled salt water solution and not to use any antiseptics at all since they delay the healing process. As it is there has been no bleeding, no bruising and as yet no sign of any infection.
Did it hurt? Not really. Not like falling down some steps or off a bike where the pain is strong and extended. It was a very intense feeling for a second followed by a dizzying whoosh of endorphins. For an hour or so afterwards I had small aftershocks of sensation as my body sorted itself out then it was all over.
When I got home my partner - who was pretty uninterested in my mission to get these piercings done in the first place couldn't wait to see and touch them! At bedtime he snuggled up to me and said "So when are you going to get a Prince Albert? You know you want one, really!". "Never" I lied, but between you and me I have got Davina and Marcus's number in my phone for next month. I'm hooked.
If you have decided that you want to get a piercing, first of all do it for you. Then do your research, pick your piercer with care and just go for it. I couldn't be happier with mine.
