t must have started earlier in my mind, but it only came to the fore when I was 22. I remember that I had seen programs on the TV when I was much younger. Tattoo's fascinated me. Everytime I saw anyone with tattoos I would stare and admire the owner of them, which I now know is rather rude, but such was my fascination.
The trouble was also that I heard the reactions from members of my family their disgust at tattoos. one of them have any and their reactions were never complimentary! That was all I needed! Tattoos are now seen as pretty normal, and there is so much good artistic work around and on display., and piercing was coming into the forefront of the wider bodyart. The piercing of anything other than the ear was, in the late eighties, only seeping gently into the UK.
I liked the look of piercing. I wanted to be pierced.
I didn't know of anyone directly in my location, and going down to London was not an option. I deliberated long and hard over when I would be pierced, and what I would have pierced.
I decided that my left nipple was my choice - a nice easy first pierce. This decision must have taken many, many months, before I took the proverbial bull by the horns, and made the decision to go ahead, rather than forget the whole issue. It just was going to be right for me!
Because I wasn't able to find a piercer, and was going to do it myself, I had to decide how I was going to do it. Once I was pierced, I would need jewellery. I just went to the local jewellers and bought a cheap pair of gold sleepers. ( Gold shouldn't create an allergic reaction.)
I didn't think the jewellers would use the gun on my nipple! I therefore
had to do it myself.
I didn't really know if what I was doing was going to be right, but I didn't know of anyone who would pierce me.
I knew for definite that the needle needed to be sterile. The best way I knew to sterilise was peroxide solution , followed by passing the needle through a gas flame. The new sleeper I soaked in the peroxide too.
My nipple needed to be numb, or so I believed from the stories that I'd heard from schoolfriends that the ear needed to be numb when that was pierced. Ice was an appropriate anaesthetic.
I went to the freezer, and got some ice cubes, and then to the bathroom, to numb my nipple with an ice cube. I held it as long as I could, until my nipple was as numb as I could cope with. I got hold of the nipple with a pair of tweezers, pulling it out enough to stick the needle through. I started to stick the needle through. I didn't think that the skin would be as tough as it actually was. It got halfway through and because the skin was tough, I thought I wouldn't get the needle through. Nearly giving up, I pulled the needle out again, thinking "Why am I doing this?" just for a moment. Then, I came back to my senses, I'd thought about it for so long, that there should be no turning back. I re-pushed the needle through, pushing and pushing, - needles aren't that easy to grip when you're stressed out and going light-headed!. I kept the needle in for just a moment, to compose myself for the next stage, putting the ring in. Pulling the needle out slowly and then working quickly to put the needle in I was surprised at how easy the ring went in, and that there was only a spot of blood between the needle coming out and the ring going in.
Seven years have passed and I've had no significant trouble.
I've used, up until recently, normal earrings of different sizes and used both silver and gold. In the last 12 months, the availability of piercing jewellery through mail order has allowed me to get the proper ball closure ring. I had stretched my nipple pierce by using the thicker part of a gold hoop, up to approx 14ga, with no significant problem apart from slight sensitivity for a day or so.
Now I've got proper piercing jewellery and I'm much happier.
No-one that knows me really knows about it. That's the way I want it to stay. I suspect it would freak them out, so it's easier all round to keep it under wraps, and after all, I'm happy with it. I don't go swimming, or even wander about the house topless, I never did. It doesn't affect my work so I'm really pleased with it!
Sometime soon I may have a ring in my navel, but I won't do it myself. I want it done properly!
