Standard top belly piercing
Ever since the belly button piercing craze began, I wanted to get it done. Although like many parents, they would never let their 15 year old daughter get it. So I had to wait until after my 18th birthday. So once I turned 18, I knew I could finally be a parent's worse nightmare and start getting all my piercings and tattoos like I had always wanted. Getting my belly button pierced was at the top of my list so I decided to get it done.
I live in Jersey and there's countless tattoo and piercing places everywhere. I knew a few of my friends who had gotten work done at Starlight Tattoo in Belleville. I went there first with one of my friends who got something else pierced and the place was great. Everyone was really nice and made me feel super comfortable, so I knew that was where I wanted to get my piercings.
The day of my piercings I was really excited. I went with two of my other friends who were also getting their belly buttons pierced and they were way more nervous than I was. So of course, I was elected to go first, which I didn't really have a problem with. The piercer brought me into a back room and cleaned my stomach. Every step of the way he explained what he was doing, so it kept me relaxed the whole time. After a really thorough cleaning, he marked my stomach. It took him quite a few times to finally be happy with the markings, which I felt good about because he was making sure it would look good.
The next part was clamping down the skin he'd be pushing the needle through. I had heard a lot of stories about how badly the clamping can hurt, but this one didn't hurt much at all. I guess since there's a lot of skin on your stomach, it wasn't as bad. He clamped it down and I laid down on the table thing so he could pierce my stomach. He explained everything that was going to happen and told me to take a few deep breaths. After the third one, as I was breathing out (I think, maybe it was in, can't remember) he pushed the needle through my belly. The pain lasted no longer than 2 seconds and it was done ... But those 2 seconds were insanely intense. It felt like someone was trying to pull my belly button off my body. And someone had told me that beforehand, but I couldn't comprehend what she meant. I thought it would be more of a sharp pain, but it really wasn't. It just felt like someone was tugging on my stomach. Anyway, he then got the jewelry and as he was sliding out the needle, put the jewelry in. That part didn't hurt that much, it was just a little bit uncomfortable. Or maybe the other pain was so intense that I didn't really notice, not sure. After giving me a minute to continue lying down, he put gauze over it and taped it up. He told me to keep it on for about an hour or so. When I finally took it off, it looked really great. It felt weird to sit up and stuff for a little while because I kept feeling like I was going to rip it out. But after a few hours, I was back to normal and didn't notice it much.
Although I know a lot of piercers tell you to use the sea salt spray, mine told me to use regular sea salt and dissolve it in a cup of water. So I went to a local vitamin store and got the sea salt. I cleaned it three times a day by just holding the sea salt cup of water up to my stomach. I did this for about a month and then stopped, although I shouldn't have. Although my piercing never got infected, I definitely should have continued cleaning it regularly because it would have healed a lot faster. I just got lazy and stopped. I never had much bleeding or pussing from it and it only bothered me when I decided to switch the jewelry. The jewelry I got pierced with was surgical steel and I soon found out that was the only type of jewelry I could use. When I tried to put in anything else, it got really red and itchy and then got super painful. So I stick with surgical steel belly rings.
Other than that though, it's been great and I'm so glad I got it done. I plan to get bottom belly button done later this year. If you live in the North Jersey area and want to get a piercing or tattoo (I have also gotten a tattoo there), I highly recommend Starlight Tattoo in Belleville, NJ.
