"Does it go all the way through?"

I fell in love with body modification when I was around fourteen. Before that, I never quite understood why anyone would want piercings or tattoos.I was also terribly afraid of needles.I didn't even get my ears pierced until I was in sixth grade. For those reasons, I never thought I would have anything else pierced. That's changed, because I now have eight holes, including my first lobe piercings. And yes, those were done with a gun at Walmart. In my defense, I didn't know that guns weren't the best piercing tools, at the time.Anyways, let's get to the story of my first piercing that was done properly, shall we?

As I said, I never understood why people liked body modification, but there was one particular piercing that changed my mind; it was a lip piercing. Before you start saying "Oh, this is just another kid trying to look hardcore," just stop.I've never wanted a piercing to be considered "cool," and my lip piercing was no different.I wanted it because I loved it, and it didn't and still doesn't matter to me if people like it or not, because I do.Now, as I was saying, this piercing changed my mind.I don't know what it was about a lip piercing, but it caught my eye, and I fell in love.I knew that I had to have one...

There was only one thing standing in my way; parental consent.Yes, since I was then, and still am a minor, I have to have parental consent to get these things done. This was the hardest part of the process.I wasn't quite sure how I was going to convince my mom to let me get my lip pierced, so I didn't come up with any plan, I just improvised.I sat down, and said to her the same thing that I still say when I want to get something pierced, "You should let me get my lip pierced." At first, i just got a disgusted look. Finally though, she says "You really want that?" I answered yes, and waited. After a bit of talking about it, I finally got a "I'll think about it." This was good enough for me, because I know that when she say's that, it usually turns into a yes.I was right. After begging for some time, I finally got the answer I was looking for.I was so excited...

So, some calls were made to the very few tattoo studios in this area, and the first one denied me, because they don't do piercings on people under fifteen, and I was fourteen at the time. The other one however, would pierce me at fourteen. We picked the day that I would go to have it done, and all that I could do was wait. And believe me, it seemed like I was waiting forever...

Finally, the day came for me to go get it done, and I was so excited, and nervous at the same time.I knew that I definately wanted to go through with it, but I was very unsure about the pain. So, there I was, headed to The Black Pearl.I couldn't stop thinking about it.The closer I got, the more nervous I became. When we got there, I got even more nervous.I walked upstairs to the shop, saw that it was very clean, which I liked, and was asked what I wanted by the woman behind the counter.I told her I wanted my lip pierced, and she told me to have a seat and wait for the piercer.Happily, I sat on the couch they had, and looked at some books they had with tattoo designs. She gave me the forms and cleaning instructions while I was waiting. My mom and I read the form and both signed it, and I read over the cleaning instructions for oral piercings. When the piercer got there, the woman told him what I was there for, and he went in to get everything set up.First, he handed me a cup with s ome Listerine in it, and told me to go to the bathroom and wash my mouth out with it for about a minute.I did that, and when I came back he had everything out.He asked me what type of jewelry I wanted, and I picked out a stud with a ball on it, because my mom wanted me to get something small.I figured since she let me get it done, I would get something put in that she was okay with. After I picked my stud, he got the clamps ready, and took the needle and stud out of separate packages. He layed the stud on a paper towel, and then cleaned my lip.He placed the clamp on, and grabbed the needle.I was told to close my eyes, and he then just stuck the needle through quickly. To my surprise, there was absolutely no pain.He asked me if I was okay, and I said yes as best as I could with a needle in my lip.He slid the stud in, and twisted the ball on.I went to look in the mirror, and I loved it.It was perfect.I payed him the $45, and left, completely happy with my new piercing...

I didn't have any problems with healing, except for that my lips are naturally kind of thick [I guess that's the right word,] and with the usual swelling, the back of the stud started to go inside my lip.I went back to the shop, and he changed it to a hoop for me, for free.Other than that, I had no problems, at all...

I've now had my lip piercing for over a year, and I love it just as much as I did when I first got it.No matter how many more piercings I get, this will always be my baby, 'cause it was my first needle piercing, and changed my mind about body modification forever.

If you're thinking about getting your lip pierced, do it.You won't be dissapointed, I promise. However, be prepared for stupid questions, like "Does it go all the way through?" You'll get those a lot.Personally, I find it hilarious. [:
