That dude was so huge!

ided that I wanted to get a tattoo sometime around when I turned 16, but I had to wait until I was 18 to get it done legally. I'd heard there were some places where you could have it done without checking ID, but I wanted to go to someplace that was legit, and that meant waiting. I knew all along what I wanted for my tattoo; something that signified Gemini. I've always been almost stereotypically Gemini, so that was the logical choice. (Well, the May 31st birthday also helps.) It took me awhile to decide on exactly what Gemini symbol I wanted to get, but I finally settled on a big, blocky Roman Numeral II on my right shoulder. I wanted something simple, yet elegant. Once I turned 18, I waited about 2 months to get it. I had told my parents I was getting one, but they didn't really believe me until I actually made the appointment. They weren't really too thrilled about the entire idea, but they accepted it. My dad was a lot cooler about it than my mom; he was pretty loose, but she got kinda uptight when she realized that I was serious about it. She kept saying "It's so permanent though!" I figure that life is short enough as it is; if I ever regret having a tattoo, it's something I can live with. After all, if I didn't get one, I know I would have regretted that. I finally made my appointment, and just so I wouldn't wuss out, my girlfriend's cousin and I went to get our tattoos together. I was getting the aforementioned roman numeral II. He was getting the Chinese character of his family name on his shoulder blade. We made like we were cool about it, but I think we were both a little bit nervous. I was definitely apprehensive about getting my first tattoo; it isn't everyday that somebody does something that permanent to your body. The tattoo artist was a huge man. I'm pretty tall (6'2"), but this guy had to be at least 6'6", and his biceps were as big as my neck! Plus he had a tattoo on his skull! He had a lot of really cool tattoos and piercings as well. He showed me a tattoo he'd just had on his left bicep the day before; it was the Phoenix rising from the ashes of the fire. He sat me down, I took off my shirt and rested my arm on the table. I was getting a roman numeral II on my right shoulder. This was it. Last chance to back out and be forever branded a suck by Tony and the rest of my friends I'd told about getting a tattoo as well. He first cleaned my arm off with antiseptic soap, and then wiped it down with a couple of alcohol pads. He showed me the sterilized needle and put it in the tattoo gun. I was definitely nervous by this point, but I kept pretty cool on the outside. He grabbed my upper arm in his big, meaty hand with an iron grip, and then said "Are you ready?" "Yes," I said. He told me that I could just tell him anytime I needed to take a break or get a drink or something. He was really very nice. Then he proceeded to go to work on me. It was definitely painful, but not so bad that I wouldn't do it again. I was actually prepared for it to be more painful than it really was, so I was pleasantly surprised. The ink kept smearing all over, and I kept thinking that he was going to mess up somehow because he couldn't see the lines, but he didn't. He kept asking me if I was ok, if I wanted a drink or something, but I told him to just keep going. I figured that I'd rather just have it all done in one shot, and get it over with. After he was done, he wiped all the smeared ink and blood off, wiped some antiseptic lotion on it, and wrapped it up with bandages and started giving me instructions. I was to take the bandages off in 2hours, wash it with warm water and mild soap, and not rebandage it. After that, I was not to get it wet until it had fully healed, or it would form a scab and heal badly. I was to put unscented lubriderm lotion on it twice a day. I was not to cover it up with bandages or anything which blocked airflow. The whole procedure took less than 15 minutes, and my buddy and I were pretty happy about it afterwards. We had gone through with it. My girlfriend really loves it, and she's thinking of getting one too. I've also been considering having some body piercing done as well. I'm trying to decide what I want for my second tattoo!
