Now my chest is even shinier! Sternum microdermal...

I've been thinking about getting a microdermal for a while, particularly after my two failed nape piercings. I did the research, looked at pictures, read experiences, and then figured out my finances -- yeah, it wasn't going to happen. I forgot about it for a while. It was around a year before I thought about it again.

After finishing a novel for National Novel Writing Month and finishing a term at school, I decided a reward was in order -- despite Christmas, my finances had an extra $100 I could live without, so I stopped by Strange City after my last exam and made an appointment with Ryan for the next day.

I wasn't actually all that nervous, which is unusual. I usually have an adrenaline high even before the piercing, but I felt overall pretty chill. A little excited, a little tentative, but not the same emotional highs and lows of when I got my first surface piercing, or when I got my nipples pierced, for instance. I gave Corby my ID and filled out the paperwork. I fudged the truth slightly on the question that asked if I'd eaten in the past five hours -- I had, but I'm not sure if a mini orange and some extra crust from a tart I'd made earlier was really what they were looking for there.

Anyway, Ryan vanished into the back to get everything set up, then came back a few minutes later to collect me. My lack of real nervousness might be in part because he's been involved in some way with 10 of the 12 piercings I had previous to the appointment, so I'm comfortable with him.

We started off by talking about the pros/cons of the piercing -- Ryan explained that in his opinion, microdermals reject as much as or slightly more than surface piercings, and that I could expect the piercing to last between three months and three years, with the average being nine months. He said that if it was getting gross and rejecting, to take it out sooner rather than later.

I will note that my clothing choice for the piercing was particularly stupid: a t-shirt under a v-neck sweater, and a brand new pristine white bra. Oh yeah, Alix, well done. I ended up just taking the t-shirt off, I'm not particularly shy, so it worked out. Ryan did the whole marking thing with some sort of ink and a toothpick. Getting it centred was kind of a pain, but through a clever test (pushing my boobs together to see if the dot lined up with the line of my cleavage), it worked out

Then it was time to lie down on the table and do the actual piercing. He talked me through getting my breathing nice and deep. I couldn't really see what he was doing, so my description here is going to be a bit vague. He explained what he was doing as he did it. I felt a pressure and then pain -- not horribly bad, but you know, pain. Then he went away to do something, I don't know what. I was just staring at the ceiling, sort of blanked out, just relaxed and calm, but not really entirely aware of my surroundings. I'm not sure if I said or did anything, I just remember looking at the ceiling. He came back, and I snapped back into it -- he explained that he had to make the pocket for the jewelry to go into -- which translated basically to him doing something that hurt, and I sorta blanked out again for a brief second before he came back to put the shiny part of the jewelry on. This was vaguely painful and pretty uncomfortable, and I spent a good minute with a view of his armpi t. He said something about not having showered all week, which made me laugh, which probably made his job harder than it had to be.

He went and got some gauze that was wet with something -- that felt pretty good against the piercing. After that, I could sit up and take a look at it. It was still bleeding, but it was really shiny and pretty and perfect. He put some gauze and tape over it so that it wouldn't bleed on my clothes or my bra.

I paid for the piercing and headed home. When I was grocery shopping, every time someone got near me, my chest ached like they were going to bump into me. I did however get home without incident, and started the process of taking and uploading pictures to all the relevant sites (of course).

So far, a day later, I think my main issue is going to be that the piercing itches and I keep unconsciously wanting the scratch at it before I realize why it itches and that, oh yeah, I shouldn't touch that at all. It also still is getting that little ring of blood around it, that I desperately want to pick at but have to resist.

Overall, though, I'm in love. When it goes, I'll have to have it redone. Because it is seriously so unbelievably awesome. I particularly like the sort of triangle it makes with my nipple piercings.
