A Tale of a Monroe

Hey there!

My name's Latiesha and I'm 20 years old, and this is the story of how I got my monroe. It all started on a beautiful August day. I had booked an appointment to get my third tattoo (but that's another story) and got my close friend David to accompany me. While I was getting my tattoo done, he was going to get his tongue pierced. I was slightly jealous as I had the piercing bug flairing and up at the time.

While we waited around for my appointment, we bummed around the strip mall across the street, took out the money I needed and goofed off killing time. The appointment comes and goes and everything goes great. But like I said, this is a story of how I got my monroe.

Instead of getting his tongue pierced while I was getting my stuff done, David decided to wait till I was finished. Sadly, the piercer was not in that day. But David was determined to have a hole in his mouth that day, so we walked from Sinkin Ink to Skinners, a fair walk down the street.

At this point my shoulder blade was already in pain. When my mum found out what I had done (she only knew I was getting a tattoo – my birthday present), she thought I was mental for putting my body through that and piercing in the same day. But hey, why prolong the pain? Isn't it better just to get it all over and done with in one go? That's my reasoning at least.

Now for those of you who aren't familiar with piercing or tattoo parlours in Hamilton, Skinners is sketchy as FUCK on the outside. It looks like the kind of place where you'd have to worry about being shanked by a biker gang. Compared to Sinkin Ink, it looked like a dump. Needless to say, being a preppy little black girl (I swear I'm white, the skin colour is an accident) I was a wee bit nervous. I had gotten my nose done there a few months before, but the hesitation was just as strong.

When I walked in, I discovered I had forgotten how clean, open and friendly the place was. Just shows how you can’t judge a book by its cover. After David and I filled out the usual forms, we had about half an hour to kill before the piercer came back from her break. So we headed out, bought slushies and he showed me his new house. And got McDonalds. Because no outing is complete without disgustingly greasy food.

On our arrival, the piercer, I think her name was Rossi, who was with us this time was SO sweet. I insisted I get my lip done first because I knew if I saw the needle hanging from David's tongue I would chicken out (I'm terrified of needles). Seeing as I had just gotten ink on my shoulder, it was a bit awkward lying down without causing myself undue pain. I struggled for a bit before I could find a comfortable position. She could tell how nervous and how it intensified with each step. Mouthwash, wiping down the outside, marking... she was very patient with me, explaining exactly what she was going to do and not moving an inch until I said I was ready. Regardless, I could feel my heart speeding up with every second that passed.

Nothing I could imagine prepared me for how it felt. More than the pain (IT HURT LIKE A BITCH. I have thicker lips), was the popping sound as it went through each layer of my lip. Pop. Rip. Pop. I almost threw up. Without a doubt, the most awkward, painful piercing to date out of nose (twice), belly button and tragus.

When I finally sat up and looked in the mirror, I fell in love. I had been secretly afraid of it not suiting me, but those fears were washed away in an istant. And seeing David with a needle hanging through his tongue wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it would be. Although I was still queasy from my own experience so I had to look away.

To date, I haven't had one problem with it. Of course there was some swelling, and we both sounded like idiots the first day when we tried to talk, especially when laughing, but since then, nothing. The swelling went away over night, no burning when I drank any alcohol, no infections...it's my best behaved piercing so far. My only regret is that I bought some really beautiful labrets, but they're too short to fit through my lip -.- But it's still possibly my very favourite piercing so far!

True love between a girl and her monroe. And my boyfriend likes it too ;)
