First Nostril Piercing Experience

I started my long (albeit slow-moving) journey into body modification at 17 when I got my first tattoo. At that time, I only had pierced lobes (gunned from when I was a child, much to my dismay as I suspect the placement might be weird now) and no other piercings. After my tattoo, I started considering the idea of getting a nostril piercing.

Fast forward nearly ten years later, and I'm sitting in a chair with my piercer and a lubed up needle aimed at my nose. My heart is pounding. The needle is scaring the shit out of me. "Are you ready?" she says with a shit-eatin' grin on her face. I know she loves doing this to people... Up to this point, she had done a wonderful job of calming my nerves. She was with me through the entire process, explaining everything, selecting the proper jewelry, marking my nose to make sure the placement is exactly where I wanted it, and taking a good long time to loosen me up with funny and heartfelt stories about her own piercing experiences. She told me about how she fainted after getting her hood pierced. She told me that piercing and subsequently stretching her conch was almost torturous. No kidding – she sat with me for nearly an hour beforehand as I asked her over and over “How bad is this going to hurt? Level with me!” to which she could only reply “I don’t know, I’m not you. Mine hurt, but piercings hurt – it’s part of the process.” But come the moment of do-or-die, I’m shaking like a Chihuahua in Siberia, whimpering and, for the moment, doubting myself. And then it dawned on me – I had been wanting this since I was a teenager. It was time to buck up and stop being such a lameass. Physical pain has no real memory anyway.

So I sigh and tell her to go ahead and get it over with. She leans in and places the needle up against my nose, lining it up just so. And then, in one swift motion, drives the needle through my flesh. The pain is intense. Far more intense than I imagined it would be. I yell and let out a string of cuss words that would curl your hair. She's laughing. I'm laughing too, partly because the whole thing seemed so absurd at that moment, and partly because my endorphins were at an all-time high and I was feeling pretty damn elated. And then I bled. A lot. Neither of us could figure out why I bled so much. I guess I’m just a bleeder. It stopped within a couple minutes and we cleaned up the mess.

She then handed me a mirror. And I looked. And I fell in love with what I saw. I never knew how the tiniest piece of metal could change my entire perspective regarding the image looking back at me. It was worth the pain. It was even worth getting my balls busted by my stepdad when I showed up at my mother’s house. (Oh he was soooo mad! I think he was even madder that he couldn’t ground me or really yell at me for it because I was 26 years old and seriously – what could he do?)

The aftercare was surprisingly easy. I cleaned it once per day using warm water and mild soap, and then did daily sea salt soaks which felt oh-so-good. It never really swelled all that much. It was red for a couple days, of course, but that went away quickly. There was a usual amount of lymph secretions that I would soak and gently wipe away if they got out-of-hand, and kept a bottle of saline spray in my purse in case the area happened to get dirty somehow while I was not at home. I made sure to be very conscientious about where my hair was in relation to the piercing (tying my hair back most of the time seemed to help), which side I slept on, and how I would dress/undress.

The piercing healed beautifully without bitching out on me once. I still look on it fondly, as it was my first real introduction into the piercing realm of the body modification world.

I've since stretched to 2g lobes and gotten two more tattoos, another nostril piercing, and a philtrum. But that's for a whole other story...

P.S. As a cute side-story, I thought I might include this. When I got home that night and went to bed, my cat curled up next to me in the crook of my arm as she always does. At about 3:00am, I awake to a light tapping on the tip of my nose. My curious little cat saw my new piercing and was pawing at it, trying to figure out what this shiny thing was on the side of her mommy’s nose. It was just about the most adorable thing she’d ever done. I grabbed her and cuddled her like crazy before getting up and giving my piercing a quick wash. Kitty paws can be germy, I suspect.
